Stevie Wonder’s album Innervisions, which was released in 1973, was considered as a global hit owing to its artistic and commercial success. The most distinguishing feature about Stevie Wonder is that he composed and wrote most of his songs, played the instruments and produced albums on his own. Furthermore, Stevie Wonder loved the synthesizer as his central instruments for arranging music. As a result, he explored new heights and grounds in various genres of music such as American pop, rock and rhythm and blues.
Stevie Wonder’s classic album Innervisions is a collection of songs about love, spirituality, and educative songs concerning social ills in society. One of the best hit singles on the album is “Higher Ground”, where the artist is performing all the vocals and playing the synthesizer. In the hit single, Wonder has performed a fusion of funk and rock and magnificently explored his spiritual side of music, which was also presented in the white paper online. Through his assortment of lyrics, he sings of how soldiers keep worrying, people keep dying, and lovers keep loving. However, he portrays the positive side of life by saying that people should keep believing in order to reach their highest ground.
The hit single “Living for the City” is regarded as the foundation of the album owing to the message it conveys concerning poverty. In the seven-minute one-man composition song, Stevie Wonder passionately sings about a struggling family that can barely meet their basic needs. The artist depicts how a father works for 14 long hours and barely earns a dollar; a mother cleans houses and earns peanuts; and their educated son is unemployed. The song contains harsh lyrics depicting racism and tales of poverty as families struggle to earn a living.
Other crank up songs in the album include “Visions”, “Golden Lady”, and “Too High”, each bearing informative messages for addressing societal ills. Most importantly, Stevie Wonder utilized acoustic and electric guitars to convince his listeners that he was optimistic about the messages in the songs. In conclusion, the album Innervisions has been described as a superior album of its era because its songs passed the test of time.
