For decades, open and dirty drainage systems have been a prominent feature of roads and streets in Nigeria’s commercial capital.

The filthy condition of many streets in Lagos State is attributable to the construction of an open drainage system. For some residents, open drainage systems are considered as alternatives to refuse dumps. All these contribute to the notoriously unsanitary condition of Africa's 5th largest economy.

The construction of exposed drainage systems in Lagos State is a culture that has been sustained over the decades. Even the very recently reconstructed Oshodi-Airport road features exposed drainage. See photos of the open drainage on the newly reconstructed Oshodi-Airport Road.

Sadly, these ubiquitous and uncomplimentary sights of open and dirty drainage systems all over Lagos State are what greets and leaves a lasting first impression on first-time visitors to Nigeria.

It is no news that Lagos state is prone to flooding. The supremely notorious blocked drainage systems is the chief cause of flooding on many roads in the state when it rains.

It goes without saying, no city in the world that sincerely desires to be taken seriously leaves its drainage system exposed.

The Ministry of the Environment through the Office of Drainage Services is responsible for the cleaning of the open and dirty drainage system in the state. Unarguably, this agency of the Lagos State government has failed terrifically in that responsibility.

Lagos State is home to about 22 million Nigerians. Lagos is currently home to 65 percent of Nigeria’s businesses, with a presence of over 2,000 manufacturing companies, 200 financial institutions and the largest collection of small and medium enterprises in Africa.

They claim the rain is what is stopping them from repairing the pothole-riddled roads all over the state. Is it also the rain that is stopping them from cleaning the drainage? Like the posters below me stated, Lagosians are really very docile lot.

We have a long way to go if we don't rise up and upturn the status quo.

Environmental laws are there but they won't enforce it. People just dump refuse anyhow with impunity. Even major roads are not exempted and you begin to wonder if there are rules and regulations against this ridiculous act.

Watch fools blame government on this one too.

No one is exempted from blames (Government and the Electorate).

However, There is a Ministry and agency of government whose responsibility it is to clean the gutters. Billions of Naira of tax-payers monies are budgeted for that Ministry and Agency to function well. Furthermore, some people earn fat salaries to ensure that the drainages are not clogged.

Moreover, this is 2019. Why is the government still constructing open drainage systems?

More dirt for Joe Igbokwe to clear!!

These same people that litter the streets and gutters would behave themselves once they are in developed countries and would never try such..

Asymptomatic of bad leadership!

There should be a ban on building open drains, if you are not prepared to cover it, then don't build it..

Autojosh you went and snapped inside town and you are calling this dirt please just go to Lagos Badagry road by Iyana Iba down to Okokomaiko and see where human beings are living in Lagos. Honestly speaking once my online business starts generating atleast 200k per month for me, I am off Lagos. The City is just too stressful to live in. Just yesterday I have to trek a very long distance because Okada and even busses we're we're stuck up in a messy traffic.

Would it be so very difficult to install grating over top of the drainages, to keep rubbish out, and let rainwater in? That would also eliminate the hazard of tripping and falling in, on a dark night.

Next step, impose a deposit on reusable plastic bottles, payable at purchase, refundable on return...imagine all those bottles disappearing from the streets, like magic!
