And it paid off for his empire. He returned to Mali with new trade commitments from various nations, and was followed back by numerous intellectuals including architects and surveyors. The visit definitely increased the number of international students who studied at Mali's elite universities.

So please, don't use Mansa Musa the Great as a stick to beat Africans with. He was a superb leader who brought great wealth, peace, prosperity, and international reckoning to his empire.

You are roping too many time epochs into one in order to create a single chosen narrative, that Africans sold out themselves etc.

In the 1330s and for 500 years after that, Africans had no reason to fear, and experienced no major foreign invasions. They were militarily powerful. They had gold. What to do? Just keep the gold and hide it, out of fear that (500 years later) they would be invaded by powerful, greedy Europeans?? Of what profit would that be to them? Gold, like other treasures, are traded for profit. So they had to showcase their wares to a world largely ignorant about West and Central Africa. The reason Europeans invaded the continent centuries later was pure greed allied to military superiority. Nothing more, nothing less. Don't blame Africans for that.
