WE WON'T ALLOW RELIGION TO DIVIDE NIGERIANS, SAYS PRESIDENT BUHARI

President Muhammadu Buhari Monday in Abuja expressed the strong determination of his administration to forge a strong, united nation from the diverse religious and ethnic communities in the country.

Receiving the Tijjaniyya Muslim Religious Movement at the State House, President Buhari lauded the prevalence of mutual understanding among the followers of the two major religions in the country, Islam and Christianity.

“It is generally said that differences divide people. We in Nigeria understand that there is no way a misunderstanding can cause division among us. We are one people,” he said.

President Buhari told leaders of the delegation, mostly Senegalese, that the Tijjaniyya religious order was not new to him or to Nigerians, citing specific communities around him who practised its ways and commended them for being orderly, peaceful and constructive.

“The requirements of our people, whatever religion they follow, and to whatever ethnic group they belong in Nigeria is the same.

‘‘They need security, education and participation in an inclusive economy. On this, we are being very fair to all Nigerians,” he said.

The Nigerian leader welcomed the prayers of the religious group for his wellbeing and for the peace and progress in Nigeria.

He urged them to convey his best wishes to President Macky Sall of Senegal, saying: “ I assure you that I am very close to your President. He addresses me as ‘Baba’,’’.

The leader of the delegation, Sheikh Muhammad Lamin Inyas, son of one of the greatest Muslim religious Leaders in West Africa, Sheikh Ibrahim Inyas said their father brought them up to love and appreciate his large following in Kano and Nigerian cities.

“We are part of this country. We have come here to renew ties and the bonds of relationship. This is our reason for the homage,” he said.

The delegation prayed for the realization of best wishes and aspirations of President Buhari, and for unity and solidarity among the universal followers of the religion.

A federal high court in Abuja has threatened to jail Yusuf Bichi, director general of the Department of State Services (DSS), over the continued detention of Omoyele Sowore, convener of the #RevolutionNow Movement, and Olawale Bakare, an activist.

Ijeoma Ojukwu, the judge, gave the warning on Monday.

The judge had previously issued a “notice of consequences of disobedience of court order” otherwise known as form 48 on the DSS.

“Take notice that unless you obey the direction contained in the order of the federal high court of Justice, Abuja made on the 6th November 2019, which ordered you to release the defendants/applicants in suit no: FHC/ABJ/CR/235/2019 forthwith, you will be guilty of contempt of court and will be liable to be committed to prison,” the notice read.

“A copy of the said order of court earlier served on you is hereby annexed for your on the spot reference.

“This court has been informed that even as at today, Tuesday the 12th November 2019 you are yet to comply with the lawful order of the Federal High Court by refusing to release the defendants/applicants namely: Omoyele Stephen Sowore and Olawale Adebayo Bakare (Mandate) in your custody.

“You are hereby directed to comply with the court order forthwith or you will be guilty of contempt of court.”

The DSS arrested Sowore on August 3 and he has been in custody since then despite being granted bail twice.

The activist and his co-accused are standing trial on seven counts of treasonable felony, fraud, cyber-stalking and insulting President Muhammadu Buhari

The similar thing happened in ABA court some years ago and the judge asked the prison warden to arrest the police officers and they were taken to ABA prison for contempt. It was just a very terrible day for the Zone 6 policemen in ABA then before Abia was carve out of Zone 6 police area. I've been wondering why our judges are not so bold these days.

Yes, if the judge ever spent noise makers' fine when she was Class Monitor in Primary School. If she ever spent offenders' fine in Secondary School when she was Class Captain, if she spent handout money contributed for lecturer when she was Class Rep in University, then she should be jailed. Only a Judge with an Igbo running blood can have the gut to release such statement of threat directed not just to DSS but to the President whom DSS is indirectly working for.
