Four women who met in a Harvard University engineering class will split time between Boston, South Africa, Liberia and Nigeria this summer in an effort to give people in off-the-grid African communities the ability to generate electricity by kicking around a soccer ball.

The sOccket 2.0 is a soccer ball fitted with a simple mechanism that harnesses kinetic energy and transforms it into electricity that can be used to charge LED lights and batteries. The ball weighs 5 ounces more than a regular soccer ball, so anyone not named Landon Donovan is unlikely to notice the difference.
