In a deal similar to one initiated with the international companies involved in the Halliburton bribery scandal, the federal government yesterday withdrew bribery charges against Siemens transnational corporation.

Attorney General of the federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke, told a press conference that the government’s decision to discontinue the criminal prosecution against the multinational telecommunications giant was borne out of the company’s sober expression of regret and its undertaking to be of good conduct in all its future business dealings in the country.

The company also agreed to pay a fine of N7 billion, three times the amount of bribes it was accused of giving, and promised to put in place a committee comprising of two nominees of the federal government, to monitor its activities.

“The heavy fines that have been imposed on Siemens, apart from the deterrence effect, will go a long way in financing infrastructural delivery in the country,” Mr. Adoke said.

“I appreciate the yearnings of some Nigerians for jail sentences to be imposed on those who contribute to the economic adversity of the country by way of corrupt practices, but the restitution that has been done in the case of Siemens is important in the overall process of redeeming the image of the country,” he added.

In September, the federal government said it had dropped criminal charges against construction giant, Julius Berger Plc, and its staff that were charged, along with Adeyanju Bodunde, a special assistant to former president Olusegun Obasanjo, for complicity in the $180 million Halliburton bribery scandal.

Case continues

Consequently, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which was supposed to arraign the suspects before Justice Danlami Senchi at an Abuja High Court on an amended 35-count charge yesterday, removed the company from its list of suspects in the case.

The remaining accused persons, former executive director of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), Maigada Shuaibu; former permanent secretary of the ministry of power and steel, Mahmood Sadiq Mohammed; former Nigeria Telecommunications (NITEL) general manager of finance, Emmanuel Chukwuemeka Ossai; and former MTEL managing director, Edwin Moore Momife, had asked for more time to enable them look at the EFCC’s charges against them.

The suspects will, therefore, appear before Justice Senchi on Tuesday to answer to the new 18-count charges against them.

In 2002, the accused persons were accused of conspiring with Siemens to accept valuable things and sponsoring themselves and their relations to trips to foreign countries.

It is a sad state of affairs when threads like these are completely ignored by Nairalanders - It says so much about our priorities as a nation and the lip service that is paid to the fight against corruption.

i can swear for jonathan, this is not his making. but the truth of the matter is, jonathan is by no standard apart from his age and education worthy to be a local govt chairman talkless of president of nigeria.
how can jonathan descend so low as to be used like a toy?
why is jonathan always jumping to the defence of criminals?
he did same when ribadu ran out of nigeria. it is a very big shame for such man to even tell nigerians that he wants to be our president.
this is the type of ppl obasanjo wants arround for easy and quick manipulations.
shame to jonathan, shame to pdp, and shame to obasanjo and co.
i will prefer an osama bin laden to jonathan or anyone supported by obasanjo.

Don't you folks ever get tired of creating this fantastical explanations for yourselves? When Yar adua was in government, the same was widely propagated of his presidency . . . many believed some puppet master somewhere was responsible for the many stupid decisions yar adua made. Now you also want to believe someone holds the wires with this president as well? When we go open eye to see wetin dey in front of us. Our 'messiah' of a president is not leadership material at all. The man is incapable of making necessary great decisions for the good of this nation at this point.

The halliburton list was released over 6 months ago. Prior to this, the grand excuse was the the US was unwilling to share data with Nigeria on this issue. Then that changed and what do we have? One by one, every single person/company on the Nigerian side fingered by the investigation is being given a free pass, even by our own 'messiah' president. Sigh!!!

I can't wait to read the SPIN our local conspiracy theorists (@Cap28, @ROSSIKE etc) will produce on how the west is the reason why SIEMENS, Obasanjo, etc will never likely face any punishment for their involvement. grin

Nigerians in general are not interested in issues that doesnt affect them directly, hence the reason the government gets away with alot of things.
What we havent realised is, stopping an issue at an early stage will benefit all of us.

How can the government sweep this under the carpet, because top govt officials are involved, what kind of message are they sending out to present govt officials, talkless of the international world.

GEJ is not any better than a common PDP politician. . . . .unfortunately majority of NLnders are ready to vote for him come 2011, and then come back in here to complain and cry about what the govt is doing wrong

This step is a step backwards in Nigeria's fight against corruption angry

God help us!

Govt decisions are taken not just by one person. Yes gej approved it but when two third of the entire people in the house accepts, u have no option than majority carries the vote. Do that withdrawal have a direct effect on an ordinary nigerian?
Re: Breaking News: Fg Strikes Deal With Siemens To Withdraw Charges by hercules07: 3:47pm On Nov 23, 2010
@Nsiman

The attorney General does not take directives from the house, he only takes directives from the president, the house can pass a motion on withdrawal, if the AG is not ready to withdraw the case in court there is nothing they can do about it

@Kobojunkie,
i am a realistic man and i don't believe in idealistic positions. ribadu we all know served obasanjo and had issues with yar adua govt and nigerian police in particular. he was asked to come and explain certain issues but he refused. he was charged to court by the nigerian police and instead of showing up in the court, he decided to run away in the pretence of schoolling. jonathan was picked by obasanjo not for anyother reason but loyality. how did jonathan prove this position, he gave ribadu what he called presidential pardon and went ahead to force the nigerian police to withdraw all charges as well as change ribadu's sack to retirement. now, we have siemen's scandal and we know jonathan as a polictician have never won any election in history so he needed all the support from ottah. a few days ago, he announce tony annenih as his campeign co-ordinator or what. are u saying any normal nigerian that wants the support of this country will use that name tony annenih?
there is something u have to face. if u don't believe in all these, then tell me the story of 2007 election that brought yar adua and jonathan on board.
if jonathan is not working for some ppl or someone, how come he is not changing the position of things in his own state?
