Accommodating refugees in emergencies may take place in host families/communities, or take the form of mass accommodation in existing shelters or organized camps. Initial decisions on the location of the camp should involve the host government as well as local authorities and communities. Likewise, layout should involve the refugees. This approach is necessary to avoid long-term protection issues, such as conflict with local communities; it will also help to ensure a safe environment for the refugees and the delivery of humanitarian assistance. Course Objectives This course will enable participants to: • Understand what is a camp and camp management for refugees and displaced persons • Apply knowledge of camp management techniques • Gain knowledge on factors to consider in selecting and siting a camp for displaced persons/refugees • Understand displaced persons needs such as health, water and sanitation, food and nutrition, shelter and non-food items Who should attend? The course is intended for people who work in both IDP and Refugee camps as well as all individuals who proved any kind of services within these camps. Policy and decision makers, governments officers, NGO staff and the refugee camp host community should also participate in this course.
