In case you haven’t heard by now, Oprah has done it again. On her second “Oprah's Ultimate Favorite Things” episode of this, her final season, she gave away 275 Volkswagen New Beetles. Audience members will have to wait a little while to receive their cars, since they’ll be getting the 2012 model. They haven’t even seen the car yet, since VW hasn’t revealed its new design. The car is expected to be available next fall.
In 2004, Oprah audience members were each given a Pontiac G6 in her famous and much-parodied “You get a car! You get a car!” episode. Controversy followed when some audience members, many of whom were chosen because of their financial need for a car, were surprised that they had to pay taxes on the prize. Winnings, like these, are considered income. This time, however, VW has offered to cover associated taxes and fees.
