Lagos is the worst city to live in Nigeria. Surprised? You should not be astonished at this revelation because everyone saw it coming. Virtually every Nigerian has a relative or friend who lives and does business in Lagos. There are lots of opportunities in Lagos, which is why investors and job seekers troupe into this fragile town. Lagos is not to be blamed for this influx as it once enjoyed the federal capital territory status until December 1991. This status had dragged a lot of attention from everyone who saw the city as a destination to hustle and make ends meet.

The Population Explosion

The population explosion in Lagos comes with its peculiar challenges. The population of Lagos state currently stands at over 13 million. Naturally, you expect that an overpopulated place will have lots of people battling for a few slots. This population issue manifests in the rate of road congestion, ease of getting a decent house, availability of jobs, etc. People who resume work every day by 8 AM would have to leave the house by early every day so that they can beat the traffic. This story is not the same for people who live in say Ibadan, Kano, Sokoto, Ekiti, etc. who can get to their place of work at the fastest possible time. It means that to make ends meet in Lagos, you should be out of bed by at least 3 AM. This does not sit well in the ears of a first timer in Lagos.

Most expensive slum in the world

There are pros though. Wider network across any career field, competitive workplace, a reasonable population of middle class individuals (good for business) etc. However, the cons are polluted air, chaotic gridlock, bellicose and cacophonus residents, high taxes with nothing to commensurate for them. Truly, living in Lagos isn't for the fainthearted.

It behoves on non-Lagosians to create enterprises which can attract young people to work with and build a thriving environment. Unfortunately, this isn't easy considering the fact that the vast majority of Nigerians are poor, majority of middle class Nigerians reside in Lagos and the fact that non-Lagosians are even poorer. Be it Kogi, Cross River, Enugu, Bayelsa, Ebonyi etc. The hack to living the life though, might be living in a place like Kogi and selling certain products to Lagosians. Again and unfortunately, not everyone can be an entrepreneur.

Op note that Lagos city is different from LEKKi city, Banana island,, Victoria island .. Not all part of Lagos is what you think.
