MARCO SILVA said goodbye to his Everton players in the away dressing room at Anfield tonight.

The Toffees boss is on the brink of losing his job and is expected to be axed this week, possibly as early as tomorrow morning.

Silva, 42, was already under pressure going into tonight's Merseyside derby.

Everton conceded four first-half goals for only the second time in 1,053 Premier League games did not help his cause as he desperately tries to cling on to his job.

Sadio Mane missed a pair of simple chances late on but Gini Wijnaldum's 90th-minute finish for Liverpool ensured the Blues shipped five against their arch-rivals for the first time since November 1982.

And the defeat, Everton's seventh in their last ten Premier League matches, means it is set to be curtains for Silva as the Toffees dropped into the relegation zone.

SunSport understands Silva spoke to his squad after full-time as he prepares to be relieved of his duties.

The Portuguese boss told the media tonight: "It is really tough for us but if you are in the relegation zone then it is because you are making the same mistakes and not strong enough to be in a difficult position.

"I am not here to talk about the fighting of the players because they do fight, but our opponent was braver but we know it is tough for all of their opponents. We weren’t good enough.

I am not the right person to speak about my future or to answer that, you have to ask someone else.

"I am not the right person to speak about my future or to answer that, you have to ask someone else. Every game I will play I will get the same question but you have to ask the right person.

"We have to get out the relegation zone and do that on the pitch."

It was a first half of fine Liverpool passing and equally-impressive finishing from their forwards.

Sadio Mane set up Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri to put the hosts two ahead inside 17 minutes.

Michael Keane pulled one back but Origi latched on to Dejan Lovren's long ball, took it down excellently and lobbed Jordan Pickford.

Trent Alexander-Arnold broke with pace to set up Mane to get on the scoresheet before Richarlison made it 4-2 at the break.

Silva was left frustrated at his side's slow start and Liverpool's clinical play in the final third.

He added: "It was a tough night for us but we knew before and spoke before how it will be tough and how we have to be competitive and play with focus and the way we started created the biggest problem for us.
