The Honda Pilot is a mid-size crossover SUV designed for those who need a vehicle with ample seating and cargo space, good handling and good traction. It is Honda's greatest SUV overall and is known to have good overall safety and reliability ratings. The pilot was first introduced to the market for the 2003 model year and is currently in its third generation. Each new release brings changes in technology, trim levels, size, security, and overall style.
Let's have a look at the generations below:

1.
Honda Pilot (2003 - 2008)

The Honda Pilot of the first generation has three different engines throughout its lifetime. The model was originally presented with a 240-hp 3.5-liter V6 engine for model years 2003 and 2004.

In 2005, the engine was upgraded with minor improvements, which increased the power to 255 hp. From 2003 to 2005, all vehicles had an all-wheel drive system with variable torque management. This system enabled the driver to lock the rear differential by pressing a button in the dashboard to cope with slippage in low speed and certain gear situations.

In 2006, buyers had the choice between four-wheel drive or front-wheel drive, both with a 244-horsepower engine, and the variable torque management system was discontinued. This new engine was also equipped with Honda's variable cylinder management system. With this system, the six-cylinder engine can be operated in four or three-cylinder mode to increase fuel efficiency. Each vehicle of this generation has a five-speed automatic transmission.

The pilot was originally equipped with three rows of seats and could accommodate up to eight people. However, the third seat may be too small to accommodate larger passengers, especially on long trips. The middle and rear row can be folded down flat for extra cargo space. The suspension consists of spring struts and spools in front and a multi-link suspension with a wide track, which facilitates the loading and transporting of goods as well as the passenger comfort. A DVD system with separate audio channels is available in some trim levels. However, due to the limited space, you can not use the DVD system and the navigation system at the same time.

2.
Honda Pilot (2009 - 2015)

The second generation has a 3.5-liter V6 VTEC engine with 250 hp and a five-speed automatic transmission in all models. The shift for these models has been shifted from the steering column to the center console to facilitate shifting and comfort. The engine maintains the Honda variable cylinder management system of the previous generation. EPA fuel economy estimates for this generation are 23 mpg on the highway, while the four-wheel-drive version achieves 22 mpg. All Pilot models feature anti-lock braking system and traction control for safety and handling.

This generation also has a driver seat position memory function that can be programmed for two different people. A powered tailgate facilitates loading and unloading of the cargo space. This generation includes four basic models: LX, EX, EX-L and Touring.

Some trim levels offer premium features such as a satellite navigation system, an electric sunroof and a three-zone climate control system for comfort and safety.

In 2013, a new reversing camera system was introduced in all models. This year, the hands-free call was possible. Additional safety features include a vehicle stabilization assistant, traction control, and side impact airbags.

3.
Honda Pilot (2016 - Present)

The third generation pilot has an overall slimmer design compared to the squareer form of the previous generation. The exterior features LED headlights and daytime running lights as well as 20-inch tires on some models. Overall, this generation is larger than before, but weighs 300 pounds less. The 3.5-liter V6 engine with direct injection delivers 280 hp and is thus 30 hp stronger than the previous generation. Fuel consumption figures for city, highway and combined ratings are about two miles per gallon above those of previous models. Two transmissions are available: a six-speed automatic on the more basic fairings and a nine-speed automatic on the higher fairings. Buyers can choose between four-wheel drive and front-wheel drive.

In 2016, a new elite trim was introduced at the top of the pilot line. It offers a variety of premium features, including rain sensor wipers, LED projector headlamps and a panoramic sunroof.

Several safety enhancements, including a passenger side-mirror camera, blind spot and cross-traffic monitoring, and an optional lane departure warning system are included in various types of fairings. A multi-angle reversing camera is standard on all models for even greater visibility. Adaptive Cruise Control and Forward Collision Warning System help you maintain a safe distance to other vehicles.
