Chook is not choke and are not pronounced alike.
Chook is NOT itchy!
Chook is used when somethng pointed, sharp or not, touches you or someone else.

In short, it is not a word from the english language. It is, perhaps, one of those words invented by our creative use of the language.

Chook came from the jamaican word jook which came to west africa when some of our people were taking as slaves there. We didn't invent it nor pidgin itself

@All

What is wrong with our people? Why is the word 'chook' a problem of definition?

Chook in urban language means,

1. To wound or puncture using sharp object
2. An insult (Australian word for chicken), sentence, 'you bloody chook'
3. Lame or undesirable thing or person
4. Nigerian pidgin English for stab
5. Full of fail, not palatable

Nough said

In New Zealand, chook is same as Hen or Chicken.
It could also be regarded by some as an offensive term that deliberately insults a woman's age or appearance.

But in this context,I'd say itch smiley

I think first of all the little girl did not say it properly in pidin and that is the reason for all this confusion. the proper way to say it is: I don't like this bedsheet beacause it use to scratch me, (as in: that thing they scratch me for body). So to correct her, she should say: I don't like that bedsheet beacuse it itches,

Translating the pidgin word "Chook" to English, depending on the context, it would be: prick, penetrate, poke, and maybe to have sex,

PRICK is the right word. But on a second thought, i wouldn't like my little angel running around the house and screaming "daddy daddy  junior is Pricking me with. . . . ., "

Lets embrace "chook" as a generalized Nigerian world and in the nearest future, it might find its way into the oxford dictionary

I agree with the earlier posters on Page 1 (I can't believe this topic has gulped 3 pages already) but the word 'Chook' is as verasitle as the word 'Bleep' (you know what I really mean). It can be used in amny contexts in many ways like the one used by the last poster ^^ cheesy

Chooku chooku usually refers to a type of grass dat has lots of a spiny offshoot which detach from the plant on contact. The spiny offshoots tend to press through thin clothing to poke the skin hence the "chooku chooku dey chooku me". Kapise?
