You manage to apply for the job and finally you were scheduled for an interview. The day finally arrived but you feel as if you are not fully prepared.

You entered the hall for the interview and suddenly your heart starts to beat faster than usual, your mouth feels dry. You hear yourself altering something but you know you are not in control of your words.

Does that look like a situation you have experienced?

You begin to wonder, ” Why do I have this fear for job interview? ”

In this post, I will demystify job interview and give a practical guide on how you can overcome it.

Reasons Why People Fear Job Interview

a) The Fear of Failure:
The fear of failure is also referred to atychiphobia. It is the fear that hold us down accompany with mental picture of defect and rejection.

We fear the outcome of our failure and what it might do to us.

We go into the interview with an uncontrollable stench of fear that our lives are in the hands of the interviewers and if we are not handed the job, we are toast.

We try to fight back the thought, but the harder we try, the stronger it becomes.

Worst still, we hear everywhere that there is no job and if you want to get a job, you have to ‘ know somebody that knows somebody. ‘
And since this job interview came along, we fear that losing it might bring us back to the cycle of job hunting.

b) Fear of the unknown:
You have prepared-or not- you have taken your time to research about the company; but suddenly you start thinking about possible questions they might ask and how to answer them. You surf the internet, you found difficult interview questions and how to as them as a pro.

Still, you feel you are not prepared. You feel something is missing. You fear that they might ask you what you don’t know. You fear that they might ask you what you didn’t prepare for.

c) Fear of rejection:
Nobody likes rejection. It doesn’t feel pleasant at all. We don’t like to hear “We are sorry, we don’t want you,” or opening our mail to see ” Sorry, we can not continue with your application…”

It hurt our hearts and sometimes make us feel ‘less’.

But,“The truth is that it may have nothing to do with you. It has to do with the interviewer/company getting the most for the dollar. And, there are tons of extenuating circumstances,” Carole Martin posited.

So how do we overcome the fear of interview?

It’s normal to feel a little tensed especially when someone wearing a stone cold face is scrutinizing your resume, mannerism, appearance and grammar.

But the little truth is that no one can intimidate you without your permission, either psychologically or physically.

a) Change of Perception
Have you ever wondered why the company called you for an interview and not someone else?

A good number of people applied for the same position but couldn’t make it to the interview stage except you, and maybe a handful number of people.

The gospel truth is that the company needs you and what you have to offer. The interview is just to validate what you said you are in the resume.

So how do you change you perception? YOU VISUALIZE.

Negative thought has a way of dampening your performance even before you start.
Nothing gets to you without first passing through your mind. So if you want to ace the interview, you visualize yourself doing that.

b) Be Prepared
Yes, you have visualize the interview and how you will overcome it. The next step is to prepare.

Here’s how to prepare for an interview:
1. Take your time to carefully read and re-read the job description. The job description tells you what the company wants, the skills and attribute they are looking for.

2. Perform and in-depth research about the company and the role you are applying for. Know what the job entails.

3. Conduct a mock interview:
Conducting a mock interview goes a long way in helping you know the possible interview questions – uncommon and uncommon – and how you can answer them.

4. Possible questions to ask the interviewers:
Most interviewers feel confident about candidates who ask relevant and thoughtful questions about the company and how they can help the company grow.

c. Don’t appear desperate
No company or organization will give you a job because you are desperate. Think about interview like you plan going on a date. A show of desperation will put the other person on high alert. You want to impress not to appear desperate.

Also, your future doesn’t depend on only that interview/position. It depends on you.
