The Obafemi Awolowo University recently held its 2019 Convocation Ceremony, awarding graduates at different levels degrees obtained from the institution. As part of events lined up to mark the grand occasion, the citadel of learning showcased a Rolls-Royce belonging to a former Ooni of Ife – the late Adesoji Aderemi.

Oba Aderemi reigned as King of the great Ife land between 1930 to 1980. Besides being a traditional ruler, he was also involved in politics, being a governor of the then Western Region of Nigeria from 1960 to 1962.

Oba Aderemi was very passionate about education, and making education available to the masses. As Ooni of Ife, he championed the movement for educating the people. He made great contribution to the establishment of the pacesetting Oduduwa College which was established in 1932.

The former Ooni is remembered for some of his notable contributions to Yorubaland including the establishment of the then University of Ife, now known as Obafemi Awolowo University. He influenced the location of the institution of higher learning in Ife, and provided the land which it was built on.

Known for his affluence, Oba Aderemi had an enviable fleet of cars at a time when cars were not common on Nigerian roads. One of his memorable cars is the Rolls-Royce Phantom V.

Paying tribute to the Monarch, management of the Obafemi Awolowo University put the Rolls-Royce Phantom V with the WF1 number plate on display at the school premises.
