It is a moral crime to be worth over 3 billion dollars without paying your fair share to alleviate chronic poverty in the country.
Moral crime you say, what were the poor people doing when the rich were working hard for their money?
How can someone who idles about at village bars while I slave away in schools, streets, jobs and businesses say I'm morally wrong to be rich in his poor society?
It's a ridiculous conclusion my friend.

This country is finished, You can't device a good way to boost the revenue and the only shallow way you can take is tax the rich heavily? The earlier you know the poor working under the rich will suffer for your action the better, Just stop paying Kings millions because they have no purpose and make sure all chances they got to hijack land properties are blocked, We can save billions through that, Don't tell me the kings re first before government, I can boost that no Nigerian King can say he never hijack land and properties before, No one, Useless set of people.
Don't mind him. He is making it seem like the rich are to be blamed for poverty in Nigeria. The top political rogues are the real culprits.

Actually, to be harsh, Nigerians need to pay more taxes.

It would be a good thing if we paid 30-50% of our monthly earnings as tax, the better to force many of us to sit up and actually take an interest in what our gofment is doing...

(Yes, I mean it.).

The truth is, if we pay taxes at a higher rate...rich people inclusive...and government does nothing...people will get angry, and throw the corrupt people out and deal with them well well.

So higher taxes = fire under the feet of whoever is in government.

But then again, Nigeria is a country where people fight for their interests first, before tribe and everything else.... smiley

Nigerian are cowards.
They never get angry even when being killed.
There is a reason why SARS is still operating despite their reign of killing and extortion.

How many protests have been done against bandits killing?

If people can't rise against killings is it ordinary tax that they will rise again?

There is no such thing as a moral crime.
And no, being poor doesn't make you an angel.

As long as a person did not violate tax laws, they are good to go.

This guy is brainwashed by the socialist movement in America. Socialism has never worked and will never work, these are the reasons.

1) The human spirit requires huge incentives to have huge motivations and make huge innovations. If you make extreme hardwork less lucrative your country will stop moving forward.

2) There is a mass stupidity that depicts that rich people have cash stashed somewhere in the bank, this is false. The rich have most of their wealth in assets and not cash, to include things such as wealth tax is useless because you will have to liquidate their assets and it will hurt the economy in the long run because if they do not have much equity, they wouldn’t not be motivated to make innovations.

3) Socialism has never worked in history.

4) The more the rich is taxed, the more the poor suffer. The rich will reduce salaries to stay rich or employ less people. You can’t tell a man running a business how much he should make, can you?

The ideal thing to do is to create a middle class to pay the poor and serve the rich. This middle class should run Small and Medium Enterprises. You can only do this by creating a conducive environment for businesses to thrive. For crying out loud we import pencils and toothpicks, this is the job of the middle class.

He's trying to follow the path set by Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, AOC, etc. What a fool!

30-40% in taxes? Do you even know basic arithmetic? How much would a man on our current minimum wage take home monthly if he's to give God 10% and give the government 30-50%?

The politics that works these days is to find people the majority does not care so much about and attack them.

Trump attacked immigrants and won, Democrats are attacking billionaires. It’s crazy!

may God bless you from generation to generation , this is the best comment on Nairaland this year. Thank You.

this is the only reason I welcomed the idea if TIN number to account, people will pay attention to governance if they are paying tax but 30% is much

Not taxing the rich directly. Luxury items, such as private jets, yatch, expensive cars (> #20 million) should be taxed 70% or more!

The gap between the rich and the poor is too much.
The higher you earn the higher the tax
And the lower you earn the lower your tax....
But the rich people will fight this with their last blood.
Are you blaming the rich people for the wealth inequality in Nigeria? Everybody was born n@ked, blame the poverty on our incompetent government not people who worked hard to secure their future and the future of their children and grandchildren

The rich in Nigeria are stupendously wealthy.
They are comparable to any wealthy person in any part of the world.

The poor in Nigeria are stupendously poor.
Poor to the bones.

The middle class is shrinking everyday.
The government should pass good policies to increase the middle class and lower the lower class and stop blaming the rich

If Nigerians paid 50% of their taxes, they would be more interested in what their government is doing...and if Mr Government is doing nothing...there would be a lot of protests and then...let's say the old guys would be out of a job.

The problem with Nigeria is that we have been , since independence, dependent on revenues from whatever raw material we sell...not on taxes (which is a big part of why looting is commonplace...)

Subjecting the citizens to poverty will not make them to lose their ethno-religious attachments. I gave up on Nigeria because the country is irreconcilably divided along ethnic and religion lines. Extreme taxation won't eradicate that. Any attempt to confront the government will always die on the altar religion and tribalism!

Nigeria and Nigerians need to pay more effort and attention to taxation, not just the rich. We are not paying much as taxes. I know it is hard to bear or hear but it is the truth. In Saner climes, tax is like oxygen, you pay or you go to jail.
If this is done here, the statement 'national cake' will die naturally, because everyone will know that the money for governance is not a dug up slush money from a green and white fairy but our collective sweats. So when the road to my house is not tarred after passing its budget, I will shout louder than thunder instead of defending the man responsible for the anomaly because he is from my village.

Taxing all the rich people in Nigeria mercilessly will never drive away extreme poverty in Nigeria.
The major cause of poverty in Nigeria is simply corrupt politicians and lack of political will to replicate and implement policies that has worked in other developing nations.
Why can't he start from cutting down the huge salaries and allowances his fellow politicians are collecting monthly as ministers, governors, senators etc if he is really sincere?
Many so called rich men in this country started from scratch without any support from the govt yet u want to tax them mercilessly to kill their businesses.
I know of one very rich man in my village that single handedly tarred all the roads that's leading to my village yet we have a govt who are supposed to be responsible for such which other tax is greater than that?

the problem with Nigeria as regards bad governments are the poor. they are the ones who vote. 80-90% of the electorate are the poor, it doesnt matter how much you tax the rich or the middle class, or how much they protest, they cannot influence elections. their protests are labelled "speaking grammar" by the poor. The poor have no skin in the game in the sense that they do not pay tax and are mostly unelightened enough to make good decisions at the ballot. so this idea that if you tax Nigerians you will improve governance is hogwash!.. For that to happen you have to tax the poor and that is the most stupid thing you can do in the poverty capital of the world!! Bottom line...nothing changes. you tax the rich, they devise clever ways to hide their assets, you tax the middle class and they flee abroad, those who stay will have less purchasing power which affects the economy!!!
