Drunk Driving: Oyo To Start Breath Test For Drivers by Gabkid40: 11:45am On Dec 28, 2019
The state government of Oyo announced that a breath test will shortly be performed to determine whether the drivers are drunk and driving at the same time or not.

According to the government, the goal is to reduce the accident rate caused by drunk driving among drivers, resulting in loss of life, property and major damage to government facilities and infrastructure.

This is because the government is warning club owners across the state to provide convenient parking for their customers or to encourage them to avoid
indiscriminate parking, resulting in unnecessary traffic congestion across the state.

The government provided the information through the Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Oyo State Road Transport Management Authority (OYRTMA), Dr. Akin Fagbemi, and showed the press a salvaged truck of robbers in the Akinyele area of the state.

Fagbemi, who added that three suspects who were caught in connection with the crime are already in police custody, also advised motorists to pay attention to safety when parking their vehicles and to avoid alcohol and driving.

The OYRTMA chief said what led to the arrest and said the truck with registration number LFTZ FZE 104 LA had been recovered when his officers appealed to the drivers about the authenticity of the property and why it had been parked on the side of the road for some time.

He explained that the suspects who were uncomfortable with the interrogation suddenly went on their heels while the discussion continued, but were later caught by the police, whose interrogation led to the discovery that the vehicles were actually from a construction site in Lagos were stolen with the hope of being sold the same in Ibadan.
He reaffirmed the authority's determination to ensure free movement during the festive season and said that his body's mandate had been expanded to ensure the safety of the life and property of residents.

Fagbemi also called for the support and cooperation of authorities and other state stakeholders to ensure security for people during the holidays.

“We are here to inform the public about our activities for the glowing months. You can see that one of our jobs within the state is that we arrested a vehicle and, during our investigation, found that the vehicle was stolen and parked along Akinyele, where our men were doing truck operations.

“We found through interrogation that the men who were in it at the time were not the real owners of the truck. While we were engaging in a conversation, they ran away, but were arrested on the way and admitted that the vehicle was stolen from Lagos and they brought it to Ibadan to sell.

"We have also communicated with the police, the police commissioner is aware of the matter and we believe the investigation is ongoing.

“We want to say quickly that during this period we will not only have to increase road traffic, but also ensure the safety of vehicles, the safety of people and even the environment.

“We also want to encourage our people to work with the agency. Governor Seyi Makinde has ordered us to ensure the free movement of people, vehicles and goods during this festive season, and that is exactly what we are doing. Our
officers and men work day and night. If you walk around you will see them.

“I would like to take this opportunity again to speak to the clubhouses in the city, because we know that many of them park here and there because of the festive season and block the traffic. We will follow them.

“You should make sure that your customers park their vehicles properly and that the clubhouses also create more parking spaces for their customers.

"Again, those who think they have to drink, we want to tell them if they have to drink they shouldn't drive and if they have to drive they shouldn't drink. If you drive around now you will find that we are more than arrested five vehicles, there are some accident vehicles that were created by drunk driving, and they also destroy some government-installed infrastructure and facilities.

“You will find that some of the street lamps that have just been installed are destroyed by traffic accidents. We want to ask people because their lives are very important to this government. We want you to celebrate this festival accident-free and without premature death.

“We would also like to thank all other paramilitary organizations for working together.

When the truck was arrested, Fagbemi said: "There are currently three suspects in the police force, but the investigation is ongoing and the police are taking care that the vehicle is still in our custody until the investigation is complete. It is an empty truck from the Lekki Free Trade Zone.

“We will begin the breath test in Oyo State shortly because our law allows it and we have the appropriate equipment because the accident rate caused by drunk drivers is alarming. And anyone who is found guilty must face the wrath of the law.

"We urge our employees to be safety-conscious when parking their vehicles and not to park randomly."
