Pretty sure overdrive is literally the opposite of what you said.

Overdrive , mostly found on auto trannies, engages the last gear, lowers the rpm while ensuring gas consumption is reduced at that high speed

Now this is a more accurate answer.

I think its the other way round.

Over drive simply means to delay gear shift or in other case downshift.

If normally the conditions for shifting from gear 2-3 is 3000rpm at a particular throttle position plus other conditions, over drive will increase the conditions of shifting to 3500rpm for example.

This gives the driver more power to play with but annoying if you are driving normally on OD since it will delay the shift unnecessarily and consuming more fuel than normal.

Honda for instance, instead of giving a driver the OD option prefers to offer you the option of manually shifting at your desired RPM hence the D, D3, 2, 1. Toyota gives the OD which does same thing although automatically. OD should shift your gear down to 3 if on 4 or to 2 from 3.

Excellent explanation

A more Nigerian way to explain it is
If you were driving on Ibadan roads and as usual it is smooth and no traffic, you turn on the over drive, then the gears will easily shift from 1-6.
But if you were driving on Lagos roads, and pothoi, okada, and orisirisi were keeps jumping in front of you till you get to Oshodi and your car never reach hear 4 that is when you turn overdrive off so your car go remain between 1 and 3 mostly to prevent constant downshifting

Nice. This is the best explanation so far.

In addition.

This can be practicalised when driving at a moderate or high speed (depending on the vehicle) after the car has engaged the last gear, without taking the foot off the throttle/gas, just turn Overdrive Off and you can feel the car RPM Increase indicating there has been a gear shift, turn overdrive on and the last gear is selected once more and RPM decreases, with this, you travel at speed while you use less gas.

For a manual driver, more like moving from gear "4" to "3"

Quite useful especially when overtaking at highways and gaining Rev on the engine for more power before selecting the last gear.

From the gear box of the common Auto Trannies with 4 gear selections will be..

1... Max gear selection will be d 1st gear only

2... Max gear shift will be 2 (sequence 1-2)

D(with O/D off)..... U ll have 3 gearshift max, (Sequence 1-2-3)

D(with O/D on).... U ll have all your 4 gears selected when necessary. (1-2-3-4)

please note that some cars already have the numbers indicated instead of the OD Button (i.e 1, 2, 3, D)

Now when at 4, to downshift immediately when needed, turn off overdrive, it brings u back to 3. Then turn it on when you are done and want the last gear back

Previous Manual drivers who is travelling with an Automatic will find that useful especially when overtaking, trying to gain more engine speed before engaging the last gear or towing another vehicle.

Just because you feel the gear wont reach 4 before you get to your destination doesnt mean you have to lock your gear at 3. u will only waste gas when it is supposed to go higher, let it do its job.

u are better off if it was supposed to go into 4 but you wont be needing it since it might distrupt your movement, probably trying to move uphill

When it appears as O/D OFF, it is assumed the vehicle is hauling or towing a vehicle or other towable. Aside the above mentioned, O/D should not indicate on your dash. I mean it should be set to ON when you are not hauling or towing.

Note: Over-drive is set to ON when the indication isn't visible on your combination meter and OFF when it appears as indicated on your meters.
Re: What's The Function Of This Button by Spur111(m): 7:31pm On Jan 22, 2020
It is called overdrive.
It’s a condition in which you’re moving at 60mph which is normally at 120km and you want to stay on it without exhausting much gas. The O/D will only strain your engine, thereby reducing the rpm of your vehicle despite moving on high speed.
