DSTV in trouble as FG voids all exclusive sporting rights
The Federal Government of Nigeria has directed the National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) to ensure that no platform has exclusive sporting rights in Nigeria.
The new directive which was issued by the Ministry of information on Thursday poses a great threat to cable television platforms like South African owned Digital Satellite Television (DSTV) owned by Multi-Choice with its flagship station such as Supersport that have obtained exclusive rights to broadcast various International matches for Nigeria alone.
According to the new directives, the NBC is to also ensure utilization of 70% local content for broadcast media, local production of advert materials and prompt payment of musical works.
"The Federal Ministry of information and Culture issues new regulations prohibiting exclusivity of sporting rights in Nigeria. Broadcasters and exclusive licensees now mandated to share such rights with other broadcasters to boost reach and also maximise utilisation by all broadcasters of premium content.
"The Federal Ministry of information and Culture issues new regulations to compel broadcasters to utilize the content and services of Nigerian independent producers, in fulfilment the regulatory requirements for 70% local content, and block loopholes currently being exploited to circumvent the rules.
"The Federal Ministry of information and Culture issues new regulations to ensure that producers of content are paid promptly for adverts and sponsored content placed on all TV, radio and broadcast platforms; and to ensure that the production of adverts are localized to create and promote local capacity.
"The Federal Ministry of Information and Culture issues new regulations to ensure that broadcasters are prevented from illegal and unpaid use of musical works without payment of the applicable license fees and/or royalties required by music rights owners, " the statement read.
