NITEL gets third CEO in seven months

Transnational Corporation, (Transcorp), has appointed a new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for NITEL, Malam Abubakar Nahuche, making him the third in seven months. Transcorp took over the premier telecom company in November, last year under an arrangement in which the technical partners, British Telecom, provided the CEO, Mr. Steve Brookman.Brookman, however, withdrew his services in March, this year due to a fall- out between British Telecom and Transcorp over delay in pumping in funds to revive the ailing telecoms company. Transcorp later appointed its Executive Director, Operations, Mr. Williams Okoye, to head an Interim Management Committee that would supervise the activities of the company, pending another contract with a technical partner. Sources at the NITEL headquarters, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, that Nahuche was appointed to head the company because of his professional background and experience in the telecoms industry. He would replace Okoye as the new chairman of the Interim Management Committee of NITEL and would assume duties on June 1, while his position would be ratified by the NITEL board on June 6. NITEL spokesman, Malam Bala Abdulkadir, said he was not aware of the change, but other sources in Transcorp confirmed the new arrangement.
