Low Tuition Universities In Portugal by Engineer11985(m): 11:39pm On Jan 10, 2020
Universities in Portugal are extremely low and affordable, most of them in the range of $1000 to $3000 per year for international students. This is quite low you, you will agree with me especially when you compare it with universities in places like Sweden, Denmark, Ireland etc. So if your budget is low and you are looking for a good country to pursue your studies, I will advice that you consider studying in Portugal. Today’s post is going to focus on low tuition universities in Portugal.

Portugal offers a temperate mediterranean climate,with aesthetic and beautiful coastline cities nicely packed with amazing interest and cultural experiences. Portugal as the westernmost country in mainland Europe – is without any doubt one of the continent’s most attractive destination. Beside the many amazing natural sites and areas of splendid beauty, the country is very popular for its contemporary culture and nightlife.

Suppose you’re a fan of rock and world music, in the main cities along the coast you’ll find tons of remarkable festivals and events to suit your tastes. But if you have no interest in this, do not be afraid, because the diverse student communities in Portugal’s major cities will always afford you something to get involved in. So, regardless if you’re a food lover, hiker, singer, sight-seer or history buff, choosing to study on low tuition in Portugal is a fantastic option.

How to Apply to Universities in Portugal

Undergraduate admission application to study in Portugal is made through a centralized online system, known as Candidatura Online, which allows applicants the opportunity to choose up to six programs in order of their preference. In addition to submitting evidence of your secondary level qualifications, you will be expected to sit for an entrance examination in your home country;typically public universities utilize the national exam, while private universities have their own. If you choose to study in Portuguese you’ll be required to prove your proficiency in the language.

Interested graduate-level students are expected to apply directly to the universities in Portugal they are interested in studying at, including submitting all the required documents, plus proof of previous qualifications.

Student Visas

Applicants from outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland who want to study in Portugal for longer than three months are expected to apply for a residence visa (visto para residencia) before entering the country. This visa can be applied for at your nearest Portuguese embassy or consulate, and you’ll have to submit the following:

Passport that is valid for at least three months after the end of your course;
A well completed application form;
An official letter of acceptance from a Portuguese university;
Academic transcript;
Photocopy of key passport pages;
Three passport-sized photos;
Police record of good conduct;
Copy of health insurance;
Proof of sufficient funds – either a bank statement or grant/scholarship.

The cost of you visa will be roughly €170 (~US$205) and will take two or three months for it to issued, so do well to apply in good time. Students from within the EU should apply for an EU citizen residence card within four months of arriving in Portugal, and pay a small fee for this.

Tuition and Living Expenses

Typically tuition fees vary as Portuguese universities determine their own fees, and public institutions will charge less than the private ones. Tuition fees for bachelor’s and master’s degrees hover around €950-1,250 per year (~US$1,140-1,500) while fees for doctorate programs are roughly €2,500-3,000 per year (~US$2,400-3,600).

It is true that the cost of living in Portugal has increased in recent years, but it is still a relatively affordable place to live. Sad to say, accommodation will be your biggest monthly spend, and the cheapest one is to live in your university’s halls of residence, which will cost between €165-230 (~US$200-280) a month, whereas on the other hand renting an apartment in private accommodation could go in the region of €400 (~US$480) each month.

In order to cover all your living expenses, you will need roughly €7,800-10,200 (~US$9,400-12,300) a year, but you may have to budget more for life in large cities such as Lisbon.

Please note that students from the EU are able to work for up to 20 hours per week during semesters, and full-time during semester breaks. If you’re a non-EU student, you can also work, but will need authorization from the Portuguese Immigration and Borders Service (SEF).
