Whether you are pursuing your MBA or MSC research work, it is not enough to assume that the process is difficult. Neither is it okay to just sit and go with the flow especially when you know that your MSC or MBA research work cannot be plagiarized.

Achieving a high grade is not just easy but the simplest process anyone can follow because research work, just like any other writing assignment is an art and once you know what to do, you have succeeded in solving over 80% of the problem.

Having worked as a research assistant on diverse thesis for local and foreign students/researchers, we have found that the problem faced by researchers is not "How to go about a thing" but "Knowing what is required and what to do" in the first place. The simple rule of thumb is, if you know what to do, it will be easy to find out how to do it.

So, to know what to do, you need to have this information at your fingertips.

1. Be Smart

Smartness is one attribute or call it a soft skill that you need to excel in your research work. Smart people sit down, reflect on the options, consider the implication of choices and decide. Those who are not smart does the opposite and in the end, they get their research work cancelled in the third chapter or even at the end. Research is not guesswork, gambling or feeling, it is a planned work that requires intelligence and a lot of thought.

2. Start from the Known: Be a Researcher

Once you have a research work at hand, smart people first want to know; what is the format for the work, what are the guidelines, what are the deliverables, what standards have been achieved before, etc. With the known, you can begin to plan for your work (the unknown). Sounds like algebra right?

3. Have a little bit of Psychology

Academic research work does not exist in isolation. This means you have a supervisor who could be supportive, picky, critical, grumpy or as many would describe, wicked! But again, smart people know that every supervisor has a style, a method and an approach. You should be able to guess this and read between the lines from the way they talk, behave, comment or suggest. So she could just say, "You may also wish to try out conducting a correlation analysis" but she strongly means that you change your chi-square to correlation analysis.

4. Get a Research Assistant

If you think you can handle your research work alone then you risk doing shallow work. You need an assistant to help in sourcing materials, selecting literature, brainstorming approach, developing write-ups, collecting data, screening data, analysing data etc. There are times where the going gets tough, you have to cope with other studies, business, work, exams, etc. while the research is hanging. The best bet is, once you get to the point of the research project, then hire an experienced consultant or an assistant you can train. Your research assistant or consultant should be digitally approachable and you should have a one-on-one relationship, not approaching a firm or some consultant who ends up subcontracting your work.

5. Take Everything as Emergency

If you have the attitude of reading few days to exams, be mindful of bringing that to your research project. The truth is, research is tedious and involves a lot of back and forth between you and your supervisor, except you want to grab a fail. So, the best time to start your research is now. Remember point one, people who are not smart keep asking for an extension or fail to submit before the deadlines. No need to rush when you can handle everything seamlessly.
