Theme: THE POOR.
.
Today, as I was heading somewhere, I decided to ply the Bata
axis to Park Road (Abia State). There was a traffic congestion
which left everybody pins and needles.
.
As the bus was moving by inches like a drunk with his dancing
road, there was this beggarman who came to the window and
began beseeching the passengers for alms, with his left trousers
folded to his laps.
.
He narrated how he was widowed (killed by relatives) and how he
needed support to cure his daughter of something ..lapalipsis or
was it ..cadaisis? ....and concluded with "may God bless the hand
who helps."
.
The touched passengers were moved by commiseration and
donated money to him.., maybe N2500, maybe N3000 or maybe
more.
.
It wasn't up to five minutes our bus accelerated (though slowly). I
saw this beggar in another car's window gesticulating! Surely
retelling his yarn!
.
Well, I signalled to an elderly woman selling sachet water bags
(with her crying baby knotted to her waist) to bring two water
bags.
.
She gave me them, and I handed her N100 (my bal. would be
N80). She was jogging after our vehicle as she untied her hair
scarf to produce my balance from the money folded in it.
.
I could see how one woman smirked at me accompanied with a
sigh clearly meaning I was foolish for giving the woman money
without taking balance first. Another man just giggled '..JJC.' This
was a woman who donated N500 to the first beggar!
.
I think the man donated N200 or thereabouts. It wasn't like I didn't
know of some fraudulent lot who run away with money
though..I was being instinctive.
.
I did give the money to the seller intentionally. The car was
moving faster now, and the water seller was still running behind
me under the scorching sun to return my balance. I had to signal
to her to keep it.
.
Why do people feign compassion for beggars and cannot help the
poor who still "hustle" and work hard for survival? Most of these
beggars (esp. in Bata) wake in the morning and bathe to go to
work (to beg), and when they reach work, they park (sit on the
ground) then send their children to attack pedestrians!
Well, not all but 90%! You need to see them counting the
monetary dividends after a 'toiling' day!
.
The irony is some people feel complacent to help corporate
beggars who 'quarantine themselves', and cannot leave N5 for
their opposite who work running in traffic under the scorching
sun!
You can simply help traffic-runner sellers by leaving a few balance!
