Nigeria Losing $1 Billion Annually to Medical Tourism

Nigeria is losing more than $1 billion annually to medical tourism as tens of thousands of Nigerians travel abroad in search of
the best treatment. Nigeria’s Health Ministry says it is building six world class health centers to address the issue; but, not even
the president seems to trust health care in Nigeria

People always want to point fingers at govt but most of the pple complaining are part of the problem. Why will u carry urself to Dubai and India for medical check-up when u can get same or even better services here. If it's not a life threatening disease, I don't see why some Nigerians do that, but still turn around to wonder why we are a poor nation

Btw this is not only limited to medicals, even education, tourism, food etc. Nigerians are hooked on foreign goods n services

PMB accounts for at least half of the money spent by Nigerians on medical tourism. I won't have blamed him if it was only during his first term in office he engaged on medical tourism because everything was already messed up before he came. Still Proceeding on medical tourism in his second term in office shows that he didn't do anything meaningful to change the status quo.

You are talking about the money spent.... you aren't considering the lives saved and a thousand numbers of amputations avoided.....

The truth is our medical sector is very bad. Many avoidable deaths in Nigeria due to either poor or unavailable medical equipment and gross negligence by hospitals and her medical practitioners. If you have the means, no amount of money is too much to maintain or achieve good health/medical treatments

There are also risks with medical tourism. Just as there are great surgeons abroad, there are also some surgeons that are far less talented. You should not be having plastic surgery from a surgeon who was trained to be a heart doctor, nor should you be having surgery performed by someone who isn’t trained as a surgeon. This information may not be as readily available with foreign providers and may make choosing a great surgeon more difficult abroad

Education is understandable because most of our Professors are sadist. Tourism isn't understandable because we have many tourist locations. Medical is understandable because our hospitals are bad shape couple with the nonchalant attitude of most medical personnel
