We watched the man pace up and down the hallway leading to the maternity ward. His heart was pounding against his chest, threatening to explode from anxiety. We could hear the heartbeat from our own realm. It was the heartbeat of a man who was desperately expecting something. We saw the beads of sweat that dotted his face like pimples, and his T-shirt that stuck to his sweat-coated body, revealing his contours. He was not even wearing any singlet – in his anxiety, he had forgotten to wear his underwear! He looked bedraggled, unkempt and frustrated, but we had no pity on him. Not at all.

Voices rose to an alarming crescendo, and chests heaved in undulating motions in the reception room. It was the voices of the team of prayer warriors that the man had invited to come and aid him in this ‘spiritual warfare.’ This was going to be his wife’s seventh attempt to give birth to a child. The last six all died in similar circumstances – at the time of delivery! The man, his wife and his team of prayer warriors believed that the death of those children was instigated by their enemies, the evil men in their village, but the enemy they were trying to kill was among them – our mother, the man’s wife!

Before our mother got married to this man, she had killed the five of us, consecutively, in her womb! She didn’t want us, yet she opened her legs for any man that promised her heaven on Earth! She got rid of us by either taking some anti-pregnancy drugs or allowing a ‘doctor’ to stab us through her private part. Two of us were gotten rid of through the latter method because we had stubborn spirits that ordinary drugs couldn’t just eliminate!

And so when those prayer warriors shouted on top of their voices and clapped their hands, we wished they could see us and ask us why we were standing in their way. We are powerful, but our powers are limited. Hence, we couldn’t make them see us, and we don’t know why God didn’t intervene in this instance. We felt that the door of grace and mercy had closed against our mother, and we capitalized on that opportunity to unleash our vengeance.
Inside the labour room, the midwives said, “Puuuushh! Puuuuush!” And we laughed at their folly. Our mother cried out in pain, as the doctor bent over to aid her in the child delivery.

Since she didn’t want us, we won’t allow her to carry her own baby till she breathes her last. That was why we killed all her six children at the time of their birth! And we would repeat that ‘feat’ again!

Our mother gave out a long groan and stopped. We watched the doctor lift up a still, blood-coated baby in his hands. He looked at the midwives and shook his head. The midwives gave one another a hopeless look, and turned their pitiful glance on our mother.

Our mother’s cry exploded and quaked the entire hospital building. We derive joy hearing her cry, and we’ll make her cry again!
