4 Things To Consider Before Bringing An ESA Home by Realesaletter(m): 11:22am On Jan 13, 2020

Thinking of bringing an emotional support animal home? ESAs are known to offer various therapeutic and health benefits to their owners. Usually, people choose a cat or a dog as their ESA but the scope is unlimited and people can have nearly any animal as their emotional support companion.

However, since they are more than pets and have more purpose than them, besides an ESA letter, there are things that you must think and consider before bringing a new member into your home.

1. Considering the Role of an ESA

Before applying and getting an emotional support animal, it is important that you understand the role of an ESA in your life. Unlike a pet that you bring home to cheer up yourself or your kid, an ESA has a purpose. People suffering from various mental and emotional disabilities like depression, stress, anxiety, PTSD and bipolar disorder benefit a lot from the presence of these kinds of animals.

Also, contrary to service animals, these animals do not have to behave in a certain manner or do some specific task to make the person feel good. Their presence is enough for it.

2. Do Some Background Check

Talk to the breeder or the person or place you are getting your animal from about the purpose. Ask them about the behavior of the animal and whether it is mild matured or aggressive. Though your ESA dog does not require any special training, it still needs to be disciplined and well-mannered. Give some basic training to your animal before bringing him home.

You can either train your cat or dog yourself by following some online videos but if you do not have time for it, you can ask a professional to do it for you.

3. Check its Behavior and Temperament

An aggressive and obedient animal will be a danger to you and the people around you. Be watchful and spend some time with the animal to test and observe its temperament. Ask the breeder about its behavior and keep a close eye on the way it behaves around other animals and humans. No landlord, neighborhood and airline will allow an aggressive animal into their vicinity.

4. Be Watchful of your ESA’s Health

Just like us, animals are also prone to diseases. To make sure that they are doing well and have not contracted any fatal disease, go through the animal’s medical history and meet a trusted veterinarian to plan a regular checkup schedule. Keep a close eye on how the animal is behaving and get it vaccinated on time.

This is important for your animal and it is equally important for you and other residents of the housing facility also. If you are living in a facility in which other pets are also present then they could contract the diseases from your vaccinated ESA.

When you decide to bring your ESA at home than having an ESA letter for housing is not enough. You must be diligent and thoughtful of a number of other things that would affect you and your ESA in the long run.
