Iran’s Attack On Iraq Shows How Precise Missiles Have Become by Efewestern: 12:53pm On Jan 16, 2020

SATELLITE PHOTOGRAPHS of Ain al-Asad, an air base in western Iraq currently used by American forces, showed the aftermath of an Iranian ballistic-missile strike on January 8th.

They were pictures of precision. Iran had struck at the heart of the sprawling base, in an area packed with planes, helicopters and buildings. The precision, however, was paradoxical. The missiles scored six direct hits, but against evacuated aircraft hangars. This, presumably, was enough retaliation for honour’s sake after an American air-to-surface missile had killed Qassem Suleimani, a prominent Iranian general, five days earlier, without being sufficient to provoke counter-retaliation.

“The most important takeaway from Iran’s strike is just how precise their short-range ballistic missiles were,” says Vipin Narang of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. “The accuracy revolution is real and no longer a monopoly of the United States. This has huge implications for modern conflict.”

A missile’s accuracy is measured by its circular error probable (CEP), a radius within which half of all launches will fall. The lower the CEP, the more precise the missile. When Saddam Hussein chose to lash out during the Gulf war of 1991 he sprayed scores of Scud missiles at Israel and Saudi Arabia. His rockets had a CEP of more than two kilometres. That is fine for terrorising cities, but useless for hitting—or avoiding—specific buildings. More Israelis died from heart attacks and stress than from blasts.

"The accuracy revolution is real and no longer a monopoly of the United States. This has huge implications for modern conflict.”

Late last year the pentagon released a report that states Iran has an unmatched ballistic missile programme in the middle east, it was an assessment of Iran's ballistic missile programme but now they have seen how deadly and accurate these missiles are in real life. Iran is the second country in the world to have tested anti-ship ballistic missile. This is the missile programme America wants them to abandon while America keeps arming Israel and Saudi Arabia with sophisticated weapons. It won't work

Their missile programme is a great deterrent to their aggressors

With this latest strike, they have shown how much damage they can inflict on any country in the region, I'm glad US quickly got the message, hence the deescalation. Just saw on the news that Pentagon is considering reinforcing missile defenses in the middle east to protect troops.

I do not think Iran will ever agree to ending their missile programme, like you rightly said above, their missile programme remains a great deterrent to any aggressor.

Exiting the nuclear deal brought us to this mess.

Iranian Missiles Threatening American Bases and Israel

In this video, we have examined the Iranian ballistic missiles. Iran launched a weapon development program against the embargo of the US and its Western allies. Since 1992 it has been producing many domestic weapons.

Iran is a big threat to western interest in the middle east hence the antagonism. Iran is the only country that can put and end to US adventurism in that region, America knows this that is why Mr Trump has been calling on NATO countries to be more active in the middle east after Iran struck America's base in Iraq. I don't know how they intend to achieve this after the so called NATO has failed in Afghanistan.

Iran didn't fire those missiles with the intention of killing US troops and for them to have achieved that without harming any US soldier shows they are good at what they do, a well caliberated missile strike. They did that to honour their slained General and they passed a message to America that they won't fold their arms and let any country bully them.

If Iran wants to arm US troops on a normal day they have proxies all over the region that can achieve that for them but they just had to launch those missiles first by passing a clear message that they are not weak.

And i think America got the message by not launching a counter attack, Mr Trump was wise this time.

They didn't get the message Iran passed

* We do not want war, but if you attack us, we will hit and destroy all your bases in our region.

* Our missile technology is no joke.

* War won't benefit any of us, Trump got the message and decided not to respond.

Why does Iran need these kind of weapons?

They want become the bully of middle east
Their ballistic missiles have covered Israel Saudi Arabia and almost all the middle east what will happened if they get a nuclear weapon?

Look at the contemporary history of Iran starting from the days of their democratically elected prime minister Mohammed Mossadeg that was ousted in a CIA and MI6 coup, the exploitation of Iran by US and its western cohorts after Mossadeg was ousted. The 1979 revolution that put an end to western exploitation and the economic sabotage that followed the revolution.

If you do a thorough research on this then you won't have problem understanding why Iran needs a robust military programme to defend itself against its oppressors

In the end, the US govt and it's military contractors will benefit most. Saudi Arabia and it's other cohorts have seen in real time what the Iranians can do.
They would have to cough out more to acquire better defense technology which will most certainly come from the west.
These are the best times to be a military contractor.

@OP
Even google map can navigate someone accurately these days talkless of missiles .
My point is it's no longer rocket science to do such.
Everybody knows OP.the problem is they will also know where, when and the time it's suppose to hit the target.
OP u can do 80% of these precision from ur room and backyard if you have one.
Problem is ur foes will know where it's coming from and the time it will enter there air space not to talk of hitting the ground.
Dude,Nobi to first fire b pros.
Can you consume/endure the retaliation from the other party?

Chief give respect where respect is due, having a precise missile is no joke, not many countries can produce such sophisticated weapon, we are talking of about a country that has been under 40years of heavy sanctions here, common bro, do not let your hate for them deny the fact that these Iranians are extremely smart.

When Houthis rebel fired rockets at Saudi Arabia's oil facilities, US and allies never believed it was done by the ragtag group, instead they blamed Iran, because they knew only few countries in that region have the technology to hit a target that precisely.

@bolded, Nobody wants war, war is no joke, millions will perish, retaliation might drag the entire region into another bloody conflict which Iran, US, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, UAE, UK, etc are avoiding, shooting at the base, they just passed a message, thank God no US troops died.

Haven't you asked yourself why the other party didn't bother to retaliate after the missile attack? Iran once downed the drone of the other party but the other party failed to retaliate. Start asking questions about why the other party does not want to engage Iran militarily. Ain't saying the other party can't crush Iran but why is the other party avoiding a war because Iran was ready for war the day it fired those missiles.
