The Government of Oyo State, South-West Nigeria, is desirous of entering into partnership with Covenant University, with a view to harnessing available natural means of energy resources for the provision of adequate power to both the residential and industrial clusters in Oyo State.

The Oyo State Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Barr Temilolu N.O. Ashamu, made this known on Monday, January 13, 2020, at a meeting between his team and Covenant University Management and researchers.

Barr Ashamu was of the view that energy security, being a key mandate of the new administration in Oyo State, had made imperative the exploration of ways of ensuring sustainable power for residents of the state.

According to the Commissioner, the state was blessed with several natural resources, with about 40 dams dotting the state, including large expanses of land and lots of industries. “What we are looking for essentially is an energy mix that may comprise of solar, hydro-power, gas-power and waste-to-energy option, taking into consideration that Ibadan as a city generates in excess of 3,000 metric tons of waste a day, which is an option that is available to us,” he said.

Barr Ashamu added that Oyo State saw a potential collaboration with Covenant, considering the giant strides that had been made by the University within a very short period of time, and the state government had also done its research and due diligence about the values of Covenant, which quite aligned with the values it held dear as an administration.

The Director, Covenant University Centre for Research, Innovation and Discovery (CUCRID), Professor Emeka Iweala, thanked the government of Oyo State for finding Covenant worthy of collaborating with, noting that universities were set up with the intent to provide solution to societal challenges. He stated that Covenant had over 31 research clusters taking up research in different fields of interest, including energy.

The CUCRID Director said that there was need to develop a road map detailing the way to progress on the relationship, considering the present situation of energy production and distribution system in Oyo State.

The Dean, College of Science and Technology, Professor Temidayo Omotosho, stated that there was need to make use of primary data by visiting locations in Oyo State, to know what was obtainable via drones and satellite imagery, taking measurement and looking at weather records to determine what is feasible, and advise the Oyo State Government appropriately.

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Covenant, Professor AAA. Atayero, commended the current administration in Oyo State for taking revolutionary steps and bold initiatives, which had recorded significant results since its assumption of office, thus making governance tangible to the people.

Professor Atayero stated that an academic institution’s core task was to teach, research and develop its surrounding communities. He, however, posited that to embark on community development, there was the urgent need to put together some important data, which would help in addressing the issue at hand.

“The most important thing we have to do now is set up a team, with their mandate being to carry out preliminary studies on the viability of the different types of energy methodologies and technologies that we may want to use to achieve this process,” he stated.

Nigerian govt looks at her universities as nothing but an headache always asking for the govt to solve its problems. So NG govt does not genuinely belief that her universities can solve any of her problems.
