HYPEREMESIS GRAVIDARUM Many women experience morning sickness ( nausea) during pregnancy.This condition is generally harmless, while morning sickness can be quite uncomfortable it typically goes away within 12weeks. HYPEREMESIS GRAVIDARUM(HG) is an extreme form of morning sickness that causes nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. Hyperemesis gravidarum includes nausea that doesn't go away, severe vomiting that leads to severe dehydration. This doesn't allow you to keep any food or fluid down. The symptoms of hyperemesis gravidarum begins within the first six weeks of pregnancy, it can be extremely debilitating and cause fatigue that last for weeks or months. Women with this condition may experience a complete loss of appetite, they may not be able to work or perform their Normal daily activities. SYMPTOMS OF HYPEREMESIS GRAVIDARUM - Feeling nearly constant nausea - Loss of appetite - Vomiting more than 3 to 4 times a day - Becoming dehydrated -Feeling light headed or dizzy - Losing more than 10 pounds nor 5 percent or your body weight. WHAT CAUSES HYPEREMESIS GRAVIDARUM It has a connection to human chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) this is a hormone that is created during pregnancy by the placenta. Your body produces a large amount of this hormone at a rapid rate in early pregnancy, the level continues to rise throughout your pregnancy. WHO IS AT RISK? - Family history of hyperemesis gravidarum. - Being pregnant with more than one baby. -Being over weight. - Being a first time mother. HOW IS IT TREATED - Natural nausea prevention method such as vit B6 or ginger -Eating small frequent meals and dry foods like crackers. -Drinking plenty of water to stay hydrated. -Hospitalization; pregnant women who are unable to keep down food or fluid due to constant nausea and vomiting will need to get them intravenously. - Medications can be used when vomiting is a threat to the woman or child. WHAT IS THE LONG TERM OUTLOOK. The good news is that symptoms of hyperemesis gravidarum will disappear after giving birth. However post- partum recovery may be longer for women with hyperemesis gravidarum. You may drop your questions and comments. |
