The Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido, has warned that unless the people of the North change their culture, they will continue to be backward and in abject poverty.

The emir made the comment in Gusau where he moderated a paper titled ‘The role of universities in nation building’ presented by Dr Usman Bugaji at the maiden convocation of the Federal University, Gusau on Friday.

The emir argued that the culture of marrying more than one wife by those who could not even properly take care of a single wife and producing many children was the main reason why the northern region would continue to remain backward and in object poverty.

He said, “There are people who cannot afford to feed one wife but are ready to marry three wives and have more children than they cannot feed, talk less of paying for their school fees?”

He stressed that unless this negative attitude was changed, the north would continue to be left behind by other regions.

According to him, “The poverty level of the North is 80 per cent; while in the south, the percentage is 20 per cent, simply because of the culture of marrying many wives and producing many children who, at the end, are left on the streets to beg for what to eat.”

He lamented that some of the wives would be divorced by their husbands, living them with the children to take care of, a situation which he said was also responsible for producing hardened criminals.

“The issues we have today such as drug abuse, Boko Haram, banditry and unemployment would be nothing compared to what we will be dealing with in the next 20 or 30,” he said.

He urged northern universities to come up with solutions to the issues.

What are you all doing now to end the issue of Boko- haram , drug abuse , high poverty rate , illiteracy and birth control in the North so as not to be worse in the next 20- 30 years time . The answer is NOTHING.

He is NOT condemning polygamy. His message is that men should marry the number of wives and have number of children which their level of resources would maintain.

The North needs population that's why governors pay bride prices and they ensure it's cheap in most cases.

Beside election, the average northerner don't matter anymore to the politicians.

The hardship is already making Southerners retract on childbirth and wedding naturally, but in a region where you can get married with less than 5k, and you have food relatively cheap with education being optional, sex becomes a hobby.

Islam promotes polygamy so nothing new.When a 18 years old boy may be having 4 wives with many litters of children in between them.The earlier this lifestyle is abolish the better for northern Nigeria.

What the Quran says is not the issue to be very fair to the holy book. But the people practicing it. Quran never said you MUST marry more than one wife. It says you CAN. So its up to you to check your capability and see if you CAN.

Unfortunately the north is obsessed with winning election with number and do not care how many children they can get. They do not know that we are in 21st century world. One Nigeria is still spoon feeding them and refusing them the sense of reasoning. What we watch everyday in middle east will be a child play when the starts in the north.

Now that Yorubas are waking up from the unnecessary support they give them to maintain one Nigeria, they will understand when this country finally break up. Is it only in the north they read quran?
