The House of Assembly re-run election in Affanya community in Abi Local Government Area of Cross River State has been characterised by violence, with gunmen reportedly abducting INEC staff and hijacking materials.
Following an Appeal Court ruling in September 2019, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) rescheduled a re-run in eight polling units in Afayna/Igoni-Igoni ward in Abi constituency of the state.
Briefing reporters at Abi INEC office on Saturday on the conduct of the election so far, the INEC Federal Commissioner in charge of South-South region, Dr Mohammed Lecky, decried the incident and wondered why people should still engage in such activities.
Lecky, who was in the company of state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr Alalibo Johnson, and the INEC Administrative Secretary of in the state, Mrs Irene Ngozi Oghuma, said the incident occurred in the middle of a river leading to the community.
He said: “Gunmen accosted the electoral officials with materials and went away with all the voting materials along with the SPO (State Presiding Officer).
“Security men that accompanied the materials and men on election duties decided to avoid casualty by not engaging the unknown armed men in the middle of the river.
“However, I thank God that all the NYSC members on duty and other election duty officials have returned safely to office, except the SPO, whose phone is ringing but he is not picking.”
But according to a witness, Justus Enyianya, the incident happened at about 9:00 am while election officials were on their way to election duty at Affafanya community
Enyianya, who is a fisherman along Agikpo- Igonigonu river axis, said: “While I was fishing, I noticed that some people were driving with speed boat trying to catch up with INEC people.
“On getting close to them, they opened fire and hijacked the materials and also carried away one of the INEC officers.”

Voters in the Akwa Ibom rerun elections have started voting in Essien Udim Local Government Area (LGA) of Akwa Ibom.
A visit by News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), revealed that polling started as early as 9 a.m.
At Ukana Ikot Ntuen Ward 2 Unit 9 with three voting points, voters were seen on queue casting their votes.
NAN observed that security was tight as they were more in numbers than the voters who turned out to cast their votes.
Speaking to one of the polling officers, who is a Corps member, Mr Tunde Adeyemi, he said that materials arrived early and voting began at the unit by 8.30 a.m.
He said that there was no challenge as the card readers were working optimally.
At Ward 9 unit 17 and 18, voters were seen casting their votes.
However, NAN observed also that there was no All Progressives Congress (APC) agents in some of the polling stations visited in Essien Udim LGA.
At ward 9 unit 30, the electoral officer. Mrs Anietie Udo, said the exercise was peaceful as voters were orderly.
She said that the only challenge encountered was the ink pad and it was improvised.
NAN reports that the APC State Chairman, Mr Ini Okopido, on Friday announced the withdrawal of the party from the elections.
Okopido alleged that the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr Mike Igini, had been bias to the APC and as such the party would not participate in rerun.
NAN observed that no restriction of movement in some parts of Essien Udim Local Government Area as market people and vehicles were moving normally. (NAN)

Princess Miriam Odinaka Onuoha of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has won the House of Representatives rerun election for the Isiala Mbano/Onuimo/Okigwe federal constituency in Imo State.
Princess Onuoha defeated her closest rival Obinna Onwubuariri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the rerun election that was held in 18 polling units in the constituency.
It would be recalled that an Appeal Court sitting in Owerri had upheld the sacking of
Onwubuariri as the member representing Isiala Mbano/Onuimo/Okigwe
federal constituency in the House of Representatives.
This followed Princess Onuoha’s ability to prove her claim of over-voting,
mutilation of figures and violence in the petition she filed at the tribunal.
Onuoha, a native of Umunachi Osu-Ama in Insiala Mbano Local Government Area of Imo, will now represent Mbano/Onuimo/Okigwe
federal constituency at the House of Representatives following her victory.
Onuoha, who is fondly called “Mama SURE-P”, had promised to leave a footprint of development in Okigwe North if elected into office.
Princess Miriam is a graduate of Estate Management from the University of Lagos (UNILAG).
She holds a masters degree in Environmental Planning and Protection from the University of Abuja.
