GOD abhors and punishes nations that shed innocent blood

The LORD abhors any nation where innocent blood are shed. One of the reasons Israel went into captivity was because of the innocent blood that were shed by them and their leaders

2 Kings 24:2-4 says “And the Lord sent against him bands of the Chaldees, and bands of the Syrians, and bands of the Moabites, and bands of the children of Ammon, and sent them against Judah to destroy it, according to the word of the Lord, which he spake by his servants the prophets. 3 Surely at the commandment of the Lord came this upon Judah, to remove them out of his sight, for the sins of Manasseh, according to all that he did; 4 And also for the innocent blood that he shed: for he filled Jerusalem with innocent blood; which the Lord would not pardon.”

Psalm 106:36-42 “36 And they served their idols: which were a snare unto them. 37 Yea, they sacrificed their sons and their daughters unto devils, 38 And shed innocent blood, even the blood of their sons and of their daughters, whom they sacrificed unto the idols of Canaan: and the land was polluted with blood. 39 Thus were they defiled with their own works, and went a whoring with their own inventions. 40 Therefore was the wrath of the Lord kindled against his people, insomuch that he abhorred his own inheritance. 41 And he gave them into the hand of the heathen; and they that hated them ruled over them. 42 Their enemies also oppressed them, and they were brought into subjection under their hand.”

GOD says to Israel in Ezekiel 16:38 that He will judge them like the women who break wedlock and shed blood are judged.

Innocent blood is shed when a person who has done no wrong to his or her killer(s) is murdered in cold blood. These killings include victims of terrorists’ attacks, assassinations, abortions by women alone or with the complicity of their male lovers, politically motivated killings, ritual killings, killings by kidnappers etc. Shedding of innocent blood is also applicable when a (supposed) enemy is murdered at a time of peace like Joab, (the generalissimo of Israel’s army when David was king) did to Abner, the son of Ner (2 Samuel 3:24-30) and Amasa (2 Samuel 20:8-10).

Nigeria is a nation where the shedding of blood, especially innocent blood is rampant. Hardly a day passes without the news of terrorists killing their captives, killings by kidnappers, killings by herdsmen, politically motivated killings, ritualistic killings etc. The most appalling about these killings is that the government knows many of these killers and/or those behind them, but for reasons best known to them they refuse to bring these killers and their sponsors to book. These murderers move around freely, while the families and loved ones of the dead mourn the death of their loved ones without justice in sight for the dead.

GOD expects that the perpetrators of these heinous acts should face the wrath of the law. He says in Genesis 9:6 “Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man.” The LORD JESUS CHRIST says in Matthew 26:52 “...all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.”

Cold blooded murders are not just cruel and callous but monstrous. GOD judges nations where innocent blood are shed and nothing is done by the leaders of those nations to bring culprits to book.

Nigeria is in this apocalyptic anomie mainly because of the shedding of innocent blood taking place in it. There can never be progress in our nation if the government fails to promptly and decisively address this evil menace that has bedevilled our nation. The word of GOD attests to these fact.

Isaiah 59:1-3, 7

Behold, the Lord's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: 2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. 3 For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue hath muttered perverseness. 7 Their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood: their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; wasting and destruction are in their paths.

Let me end this message by reminding us of GOD’s warning to Israel in Leviticus 18:24-25, 27-28.

24 Defile not ye yourselves in any of these things: for in all these the nations are defiled which I cast out before you: 25 And the land is defiled: therefore I do visit the iniquity thereof upon it, and the land itself vomiteth out her inhabitants. 27 (For all these abominations have the men of the land done, which were before you, and the land is defiled 28 That the land spue not you out also, when ye defile it, as it spued out the nations that were before you.

Notice the words: land, defiled, vomiteth and spue.

The above simply means that a land that is defiled, especially with the blood of the innocent will vomit and spue out its inhabitants. This prophecy came to pass not just to other nations but in the life of the nation of Israel. Let us Nigerians be reminded that Israel did not live the Promised Land from about AD 70 until AD 1932. For many centuries they were in exile. They were in worldwide exile for 1,900 (One Thousand Nine Hundred) years. If GOD did it to Israel because of their disobedience and sinfulness, do we think that Nigeria will be exempted?

The time has come for us and our leaders to repent of our wickedness and turn to the living GOD Who shows grace and mercy to all that call upon Him [2 Chronicles 7:13-14; Isaiah 1:18-20; Joel 2:12-14].
