LEVITTOWN, NY — The Levittown Public Schools Board of Education recently honored several standout high school football players and a coach. The Jan. 22 meeting also featured a high-energy presentation from Northside Elementary School students and staff who spotlighted the school's new character education program, ACTION, standing for acceptance, compassion, trustworthiness, integrity, optimism and nice.

Surrounded by proud coaches, family members, high school principals John Coscia of Division Avenue High School and Joseph Sheehan of General Douglas MacArthur High School, Division Avenue's chairperson of physical education Sean Smith and head of physical education, health and athletics J. Keith Snyder, 11 student-athletes were recognized for their outstanding athletic achievements on the football field.

MacArthur High School head football coach Bobby Fehrenbach was also recognized for being the Lou Rettino High School Coach of the Week recipient for week eight of the 2019 season. The New York Giants and Gatorade selected him based on his commitment to promoting youth football, developing motivated student-athletes and his overall community involvement.

During Northside Elementary School's presentation to the board, Principal Frank Mortillaro and Assistant Principal Dyanne Case, along with staff members and nine students presented on the school's ACTION program. The goal was to instill kindness in the building and help students develop positive character traits. Social worker Samantha Romano discussed the program's daily challenges and the positive ticketing system that the school has in place. In addition, three ACTION All-Star students who were nominated in January for embodying the meaning of the acronym spoke about why they were nominated. At the end of the presentation, members of the board of education and central administration received ACTION-themed T-shirts, courtesy of the school.
