PREGNANCY AND MISCARRIAGE
A miscarriage is the loss of a fetus before the 20th weeks of pregnancy.
More than 80% miscarriage occur within the first three months of pregnancy . Miscarriages are less likely to occur to occur after 20weeks gestation, but if it occurs is termed late miscarriage.
SYMPTOMS OF MISCARRIAGE
- Bleeding which progresses from light to heavy
- Severe cramps
- Abdominal pain
-Weakness
- Worsening or severe back pain
- fever with any of the listed above

CAUSES OF MISCARRIAGE
Most miscarriages happen when the unborn baby has fatal genetic problems usually this problems are unrelated to the mother.
Other causes includes
- infection
- Medical conditions in the mother such as diabetes or thyroid disease
- Hormonal problems
-lmmune system response
- Physical problems in the mother
- Uterine abnormalities
- Cervical insufficiency

A woman has a higher risk of miscarriage if she
- is over age 35
- Has certain disease, such as diabetes or thyroid problems
- Has had three or more miscarriages
MANAGEMENT
Miscarriages is best managed in a good hospital, when you notice one or two of the symptoms above do not delay rush to the hospital, for proper management, the life of your baby can be saved if you report early to the hospital.
However even if you lost the baby, is still important to visit the hospital to check if there is any retained product, so that proper evacuation is done to prevent further bleeding or infection.
CAN MISCARRIAGES BE PREVENTED?
Usually a miscarriage cannot be prevented and often occurs because the pregnancy is not normal. If a specific problem is identified with testing then treatment options may be available.
Sometimes treatment of a mother illness can improve the chances for a successful pregnancy.
Miscarriage is not a very pleasant situation, however is not the end of the road for a woman because mothers that had miscarriages still gives birth to the number of children they want.
Taking time to heal both physically and emotionally after a miscarriage is also important. Above all don't blame yourself for the miscarriage. Counseling is available to help you cope with your loss. Pregnancy loss support group may also be a valuable resource to you and your partner.
