Ugandan MPs divided over distribution of hoes

Ugandan members of parliament (MPs) disagreed over the distribution of hoes to members constituents alleging only some constituents are getting more than others.

The Ugandan president, Yoweri Museveni promised to provide 18 million hoes to six million households in a bid to transform the nation from an agrarian to industrial economy by 2040, according to a local newspaper, the Daily Monitor report.

During a budget committee meeting of the parliament, MPs were reported to have quizzed the MP in charge of the Agriculture committee, why only selected MPs were given hoes for their constituents.

Nice gestures by the Ugandan government, but then, if you really want to transform a country to an industrialized nation in 20 years time then Hoes aren't the way to go about it. That's so 17th century and subsistence-farming-ish.

The agricultural revolution has caught a new buzz. It's called mechanized farming/agriculture and subsistence or smallholder farmers hardly feature in that picture.

Africa is seriously lagging behind as far as 21st century agribusiness is concerned and that is why African nations remain net-importers of agricultural produce and end products.
I mean, take a look at fellow "Third World/developing" economies, in South America like Brazil for instance, and how they have caught on the buzz of mechanized agriculture. Brazil is a major player in that field these days.

Time to take it a notch higher. Drop the hoes and cutlasses and rev up the tractors and combined harvesters. We can do better than our ancestors. Gone are the days when agriculture was a backbreaking venture. Farming is a whole lot smarter now.

Funny I will say, hoes for industrialization. Which way Africa?
