Women besiege PDP secreatriat in Ilorin, demand female gov

Ilorin—Hundreds of women across Kwara State, yesterday, besieged the state secretariat of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Ilorin to demand for female candidacy as the successor to the outgoing governor, Dr. Bukola Saraki.
The women in about 32 commercial buses believed that it’s only a woman governor that could continue with what they described as the good works of the outgoing administration.
The women who were mainly politicians, students and markets woman, among others said it was high time the PDP leaders looked into their plight so as to move the state forward and also enhance the political stability in the state.
The spokesman of the group, Barrister Yemisi Bamidele impressed it upon the PDP leaders that, women should be given chance to lead the state in 2011 in view of the past neglect that had greeted the womenfolk in the country.
She noted that history and record have confirmed that, the women equally possessed the required talents and exposures that can help the nation to move forward if allowed to occupy the leadership position like that of the governor of the state.
Bamidele added that, the leadership of the party in the state should encourage the women in politics stressing that, it is by so doing that they would be able to contribute their quota towards the growth of the state and in the nation in particular.
In his response, the state chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Yusuf Aiyedun explained that, the leadership of the party was not against the women from occupying the governorship seat of the state.
He further explained to them that, in encouraging the women in politics, the national headquarters of the party has exempted the women from paying any kobo as nomination form of the party .
Aiyedun who urged them to shun any acts that may affect the existing peace in the state noted that, since they have obtained the nomination form, they should work hard for the primaries of the party so that they could achieve their desired ambition
