Buhari Approves Two New Seaports – Railway From Port Harcourt To Maiduguri by NGpatriot: 3:44pm On Jan 29, 2020

Minister of Transportation, Rt Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has announced plans by the Federal Government to construct the Port Harcourt-Maiduguri Rail line. He said the President has also approved the building of two new seaports. One in Bonny, Rivers State and the other in Warri, Delta State.

Amaechi expressed the assurances of President Muhammadu Buhari to reconstruct the entire stretch of the rail line with a spur to a railway industrial park in Port Harcourt which has been added to the design.

Amaechi spoke during the Deloitte in dialogue: Nigeria Economic Outlook 2020, held at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos, Tuesday, on the topic, “Railway Infrastructure: Progress and Plan.”

He said, “We will provide railway for Port Harcourt to Maiduguri… The President has assured me. We are discussing and an announcement would be made on the project soon.

“The President has also approved the construction of two new seaports. One in Bonny and another in Warri. The first deep seaport we’ll have in Nigeria is already being built in Lekki. There’s one being proposed by the Akwa Ibom State government. I think they call it Ibom Seaport. I’ve told them to bring it and I’ll give them all the backing they need.

“I tell people that this government is by far more business-friendly. We would leave as much infrastructure for Nigeria.”

On improving transportation of goods and services across the country, the Minister said, “Nigerians are mostly particular about human transportation, how they can commute from Lagos to Ibadan daily, but the most important is actually for moving cargo to enhance productivity. Lagos to Kano rail is capable of moving 30 million tons of Cargo from Lagos to Kano, while Port Harcourt to Maiduguri can take 11 million tons of cargo.

“We would also look at a policy to ensure that after building the railways, there are certain cargoes that will not be allowed on the roads, to encourage the movement of cargo on the rail lines and to ensure that our roads last longer… Moving cargo across the country through rail would be cheaper and faster than the roads.”

Amaechi added that the just-completed Warri-Itakpe rail line which was the first standard gauge rail line in Nigeria “was started about 34 years ago, abandoned, and now we have completed it, built stations, 1000 housing units for staff, workshops, all ready.

For maritime security, Amaechi said, “we are trying to put in place, 3 helicopters, 2 airplanes, 4 to 6 drones, 24 hours, we will be in the air, watching Nigerian waters from Lagos to Calabar, training soldiers, because this time we said not just the Navy, we want soldiers to come in, we want SSS, police, we want Airforce to come in; so for 24 hours, from my office, I can see Nigerian waters from beginning to the end.

These are laudable goals. We need a good continuity of these plans in govt

Is there really a need to build new seaport? Why not upgrade the existing ones to international standard, dredge them to increase their draft since vessels are complaining of their draft, and let them become optimally functional?

What's with us in this part of the globe?

After decades of rot and neglect, it's good to see the SS getting the attention they truly deserve.

They've done all that, this is the reason why the ports in that region are thriving and more ships are heading to the ports in that region like never before.

Please stop saying what you don't know.
You can't be in your village and talk of what is happening in a region.

They did absolutely nothing. Maerskline recently forced their hands that it will be berthing in the Eastern corridor, because it's becoming a bad business to berth and dock in APAPA WHARF, they raised the issue of the shallow daft, which made them to direct only their flat bottom vessels to sail down the Eastern corridor. There's also the issue of security raised by them.

Please get your facts right before you say things in a public forum.

Stop confusing yourself with different issues, the problem with Apapa port is congestion so they upgraded and dredged the ports in the SS to decongest Apapa port. They are doing the right thing across the board.

That company won't dare head to the SS ports if they weren't upgraded or conducive for their bottom line.

Only if this country will abide by the rules of continuation............that is the only way this country will move forward.

Starting laudable project is not the problem.......just continuation.

I wish them good.......

cool
Why Maiduguri or Sokoto when Abuja, Benin City and all Niger Delta region have no railways connection?

Is Borno state contributing anything?? It's all gonna come from Niger Delta Oil Money.

Is Buhari thinking of bringing bokoharam to port Harcourt?? Cos the population of Almajiris in port Harcourt is very small compare to Lagos axis

No single work has been done in Onne port as we speak.

For the eastern rail line, it is a good idea to revitalize the old and dilapidated railway.

The point is that the topic is misleading, it has neither been presented or approved. Mr. Amaechi said he has been talking with Buhari about it. That it will be announced soon. Even when approved, will it be awarded? Even when awarded will it be funded? Where is the money coming from? China loan or Euro bond or IMF loan? Won't the politicians swallow the money as usual? How many years will it take to be completed?

That is yet another political promise like we will decimate boko haram.

Hahahahaha, they upgraded nothing, I am in Port Harcourt presently, so am giving you first hand information. Don't worry before the week runs out, u will get to Onne and snap pictures, so you stop arguing blindly.

Since you are insisting on the upgrade, can you be specific about what they upgraded

Is it in terms of equipments
Or dredging the seaport
Or increased infrastructure
Ror increased security?

I even remember recently somebody was giving awrd as the best staff in Calabar wharf, reason being that when the vessels came calling, he is the one to use a smaller boat and be showing them where to navigate.

If there has been upgraded, there won't be need for such.

Please provide credible links or where and when the upgrade was done, b cause this government of propaganda will not do such upgrade and we won't hear or see it.

Lol, will the rail line pass through empty lands before getting to Maiduguri?

Attached is the map of Nigeria, now try to see how many states the rail will pass through from Port Hacourt before getting to Maiduguri.
