I wouldn't be surprised if she did it to feed her child/children. Not saying it is right though but feel pity for her.

When I see people stealing food items, I just take pity on them... Only God knows the level of hunger and desperation that was killing the person. Although stealing is bad but then, this society should learn to be more compassionate... I once read a story of an American police officer that caught somebody shoplifting food items for his hungry kids, instead of arresting the guy, he paid for the items the man stole.

I don't really know the truth, I think the law is somehow mild at people stealing BASIC food items like rice, beans, yams etc. Well I don't really swallow that assumption though because the law is designed with a monster face. It might just be the judges descrition, which spreads all over as if the law allows it.

Stealing is bad and should be discouraged/punished, but come on. Sometimes even judgment must be done with a human face. I don't support disgracing a genuinely poor/hopeless woman like this driven by hunger and frustration to steal a cooking item. I would simply retrieve the stolen item and shoo her away at worst.
