I realize that most clients are usually ripped off when it comes to the sand filling stage during construction so i decided to give an insight on how you can calculate the volume of sand needed for filling in order to justify whatever quote you get.

To get the volume

filling sand needed, all you need to do is to ensure that you first of all get a honest supplier who will ensure that the bucket of the truck is filled up flat and not hipped up so as to get accurate volume, although most supplier don't usually agree to flatten the sand in thebucket so as to get few tons off each trip.

(1) Get a honest supplier and measure the bucket of the truck he wants to use to supply the sand. To get the Volume of sand in the bucket, measure the length x width x Depth

Take for example a truck bucket of 3600mm long x 2100mm widebucket so as to get few tons off each trip.
principle of conversion from millimetre to metres you will have 3.6m x 2.1m x 0.9m)

Therefore 3.6m x 2.1m x 0.9m= 6.804 cubic metre (This is the volume of sand in the bucket)

To get the total volume of sand needed for the filling of the foundation, you have to apply the samemeasurement to every room space requiring filling after the foundation wall.

Take for example, to fill a room space size 6m long x 4m wide x 0.68m deep.

6m x 4m x 0.68m= 16.32cubic metre(This is the actual volume required for that room space, but you have to allow for compactioon)

To get the total tons of sand in the bucket of the truck flattened:
The total volume of the bucket of the truck multiply by the constant 2.50 or 2.00
i.e. 6.804 x 2.50(for loose filling sand) and x 2.00 (for red laterite sand) = xx tons

To get the total tonsof sand required to fill the room space:
The total volume of the standard room space multiply by the same constant as described above
i.e. 16.32 x 2.50 or 2.00 = xx tons, but add extra 10% of total value to give allowance for compaction.

Therefore to know the trips of truckRequired to fill up the space:
Total tons required to fill the room space divided by the total tons of the truck.
