Why Kano's female high-school graduation Before Marriage Law wont work. by Blue3k(m): 5:52pm On Jan 31, 2020
Kano state passed a law requiring girls finish secondary school before they can get married. It's a feel good law but it wont accomplish much. The law will easily be circumvented because the state recognizes marriages from other states.

Other neighborhing states will gladly register these marriages. It's good money for them. Unless the law is made nationwide you can go anywhere within the country. If the people in question are very persistent they can visit Niger Republic to get get married. Nigeria recognizes marriages from other countries afterall.

The major issue is the culture. The South has no such laws but a higher percentage of girls finish secondary school. The parents should discourage girls on marrying too early. Even if they do decide get married right at 18 encourage them to finish school.

And what are the Northern elites doing about it, after all their daughters will eventually get married

The state assembly didn't think this law through or they're just did it look good. These same families pay for weddings so they can afford weekend trips katsina. Im not sure this law will catch on outside of Kano either.

Are drop out allowed to get married? That's one thing that was ever discussed in the original thread.

The people are slaves to the "elites". A flawed law was passed and Emir Sanusi complains the phenomenon but the people do their thing. The law is pointless but the compulsory education is beneficial. Eliminating the broken almajari culture is next big step but who's marrying them anyway? Government sponsored campaigns wiould be most effective ways to change attitudes.

Naptu2 the law does nothing. Your long reply doesn't dispute anything I posted on this thread. You made a straw man points. The child right act doesn't require you get a secondary school degree before marriage. If you dont want discuss on nairaland that's fine.

The law is just a feel good law to get people talking but doesn't do anything in actuality. A few speaches and donations are good but are drops in the bucket. There's much more they can do. If you look at why most people dont finish school you'll see its because finances. Marriage is tiny percentage of the whole.

The law is good but i would have loved if there is a law to ban Almajiri and make education compulsory at least to secondary school level with female empowerment.

They did make school compulsory. The almajari will be integrated into system. It's not a ban but it's better than nothing. What does female empowerment policy entail?

Your comment is dumb on too many levels. Education is free in the state. You should take advantage of the opportunity yourself if you live in Kano.

Shugabankasa, this is exactly what blue3k is saying. Nor be to pass law. A cultural shift is needed.

Lol it seems the marriage law was made to check over population aswell. I've already explained why they law wont be sucessful. Nobody seems to have a counter argument. The law wont do much curtail over population. If these girls are still getting married anyway and aren't on birth control the population growth will be similar.

Ganduje interview excerpt:

Do you have specific policies towards girl-child education?

For girl-child education, since we made education to be compulsory from basic to secondary school, you know that we will not allow girls to roam about selling items along the streets and filling stations. All girl-child must be in school and by implication, early marriage is being curtailed because they have to finish secondary school before they get that opportunity (marriage). That also in a way is checking over population which is a big problem in Nigeria.

Did the law work as intended? It's been 3 years and I haven't seen anyone do anyone do a follow up on the results. It's normal for to judge laws on their intentions instead of their results.
