So the monthly salary of a Professor of Medicine was $143. Tell me how that kind of person wont run away even if its to do lesser jobs

That is a fine salary to earn in the 1920s or something, but not in the 1990s, lol. No wonder he left.

All these one na theory,  When you become a Professor of medicine and you earn $150 a month, Sit down there and give us those thories you are talking about
it is not what you earn. it is what you save. thought you knew.
in nigeria i can bet my last dollar that had he stayed, he would have built a house, and then he would be using his salary to enjoy the exquisite taste of pepper soup and guiness. instead he is in england getting hit up for council tax, tv license, rent, road tax, light bill, gas bill, congestion charge, internet bill, water rate, phone bill, travel card money, etc etc. i bet you that prof will end up being a daddy london with only $150 savings in his natwest account and a council house in new cross gate to his name while his friends who stayed in naija would have figured out the system and would have several mansions in nigeria. i have friends who are medical doctors in nigeria. apparently there are tonnes of ways you can make money (tax free) as a doctor in naija. these guys make around $500,000 in nigeria doing private practice and catering to the rich and subsidy to the middle class. so what did you say again ?

I have never met a poor Nigerian doctor in America in my life (who has passed his board exams, at least.) All the ones I've met are pretty well off, have nice homes, beautiful wives/girlfriends, drive nice cars, etc.

You mean he can save from the $150 per month?

Assuming he doesnt spend anything and he saves everything. How long would it take him to save up to buy what he wants.

The way you talk people would know you know nothing about Nigeria. Ask people who lived in Nigeria . I had a professor in Ife who used to drive a 1975 beetle and the door wouldnt close because he was too poor and underpaid to buy another.

BTW No Licensed medical Doctor in the US makes less than $150k a yr. Any Doctor in US would own a House and drive any car of his choice.

I know one Nigerian Doc in a church I once attended who makes over $700k a yr as a Neurosurgeon

well all that party is coming to an end now. doctors pay will be in the $50,000 to $100,000 region in 2 years time at most. most doctors are now retiring or running to panama and costa rica to set up private practices. apparently they were in it for the money and not to help the public

save ur breath bro, people dont seem to think Nigerians abroad are doing xtreemly well in these dificult situation, just a few stupid elements are putting th sh**t on us  but thats true with any society, good eggs and bad ones exists, cost of living is proportionate to earnings here if you can manage, not same in Nigeria, its either its too much fru bribes  and loathing or its too small by wages being stollen or ghost workers amongst existing ones.

no he would have figured out the system in nigeria and being able to make millions of dollars in a year. i know people who make millions of dollars in nigeria. they specialize in abortion though  grin they come to america every december to deposit million dollar cheques into their account in america.  and there are doctors in primary care and other specialties like 'infectious disease' and podiatry who make less than 150 k.

if you attended med school in the US, chances are you keep paying off your debt for a number of years after you graduate.

things arent as rosy as you're making them out to be.

the person earning $700k [doubtful] has to pay huge taxes on that money, no?

the overseas system is more structured than nigeria, and if you make huge amounts of money legally rest assured the feds will be on your back watching your every move.

people are struggling nah. undecided

btw, the Ife professor probably couldnt buy a new car because he was busy putting his kids through school. Does he still drive the old one, and if so, it could be by choice.

mind you, i'm not saying people shouldnt travel out or that nigeria is heaven, before i get jumped.

abortions arent the only way a doctor can make money back home.

it's just one of the easiest, which is why many decide to go that route.

much income for relatively little work, and the patients are willing to pay quick cash, no questions asked.

Ordinary strogers where most of the people who go do not have insurance and can't pay, the cost per night for bed is $3000 and the pay across the board for doctors(no matter nationality is same ooo). You folks need to stop manufacturing these fantastical stories because, guess what, we can easily verify you are lying through your arse. ROFLMAO!! this is not Nigeria where you can make things up out of thing air and expect people to buy it because they have no other choice. shocked

malpractice insurance of the top is $100,000. then when you are in that tax bracket, thats 40 percent tax, overheads etc. out of that 700k, he will prolly end up with 200k when all is said and done but like i said, medicare does not pay out again. obama is restructuring everything. now you only get 10 percent of what you put into medicare. doctors are quitting in droves now, some are running to south america, some are moving to abuja cuz they can make more money there now

One of my closest friends is still without papers, has no college degree, yet is making $50k+ a year at an engineering firm as a draftsman/CAD specialist. He recently bought a beautiful home in a prime location.

As much as I like Nigeria, there is simply no way to compare it economically to the US. If you have any sort of talent or ability (law, medicine, engineering, etc) and can get work in the US, in 95% of cases you are better off leaving.

Just too much opportunity here if you have the right credentials (and can pass whatever certification exams are required for your field.)

Though the market for law graduates is absolutely terrible right now (and has been horrific for the past two years.)

seems appropriate if you consider that all they are doing is deporting the ones who are already in american jails for all kinds of offences.

"He without sin cast the first stone", even the immigration officer and American govt doing the deporting get their own closet calabash. Such is life. IMO traveling as an undocumented migrant shouldn't make you criminal. And for those who chose the illegal route, they should be face the consequences of their action. Life is a huge gamble.

Sure you pay your debt, But how much debt are we talking about here, If you earn excess of 200k, You should clear your debt in less than 10yrs after which you pocket all your money after tax and malpractice insurance.

the person earning $700k [doubtful] has to pay huge taxes on that money, no?

the overseas system is more structured than nigeria, and if you make huge amounts of money legally rest assured the feds will be on your back watching your every move.

If you earn that amount definitely you would be taxed but I dont think he can be taxed at 50% that means he still ake an excess of $350k a yr home

BTW not everyone would have loved to travel but when a full professor earn a salary of $150 per month, I am he would reconsider his patriotism

Hpw can you possibly buy a new car on a $150 a month salary? Definitely not by choice

Re: 380 Nigerians Are Deported From The Us Every Week. by Redman44(m): 9:21pm On Dec 13, 2010
This thread is actually making me remember the roaring 90's. Between 1990-1998, a lot of young Nigerians left for Europe and North America. Quite a number of my secondary school colleagues and juniors travelled out after writing their last SSCE Paper. Travelling out was the in thing those days and the desire to live in Europe and America among youths in the country has not really waned.  The words 'Deport' and 'Deportation' have always been in my mental vocabulary since I was 13 years old. As I grew up in Nigeria, I always heard stories of how one Tayo, Kehinde, Idris or Emeka was deported from Spain, Jand or Belgium. What I'm trying to say is that people on this forum should not be scared about the word 'Deportation'. Nigerians are facing different challenges in Europe and America. The other day, I read about the plight of Nigerians in Malaysia and I was almost crying. As much as I don't support illegal migration or people overstaying their visas, I am not going to condemn anyone who has no status in the western world.

People will always get deported and there is nothing we can do about it. Countries have their laws and they have to enact them. However, many Nigerians are at the root of the problems they are going through themselves. How can somebody without papers start driving a car all around the streets of London or New Jersey ? You know you don't have papers and you keep claiming benefits with different false names ? The Benefits database has now been linked with the Home Office database in Britain, so there is no way to circumvent that route again.  You know you don't have papers and you're engaged in crime and defrauding other people Why won't you get caught and deported? Then some very evil Nigerians start selling drugs and eventually get busted cry cry cry  If you check properly, you will find out that many Nigerians who get deported have a criminal record.  Why can't our people find something productive to do pending the time when they can sort out themselves and get their papers? There are a lot of things to do and keeping a low profile is very good. I have seen illegal immigrants who own houses and food shops in Britain especially among the Asian Community. The Asians are not snitching on one another and they know how to cover their tracks. Why do Nigerians love antagonizing one another in the Western World? God help us.

Besides, all threads that highlight the problems Nigerians face abroad should be driving Nigerian youths to really addressing the issue of bad leadership in Nigeria.  If it means really working for a honest person to become Nigeria's President, so be it.  I know the time is coming when Nigerians will travel home to organize protests, register to vote and actually contest for posts as low as Councillors in their Home states or States where they grew up.  Until then, keep developing yourself anywhere you are either legally or without a status. Cheers.

Before you want to judge, about someone or someone's life, put his shoes on and go his way, pass through the streets, mountains and valleys, feel the grief, experience the pain and the joys. . . . and only THEN you can judge. . . .

Dayo, I totally agree with you that professionals have far better oppurtunities in terms of career progression especially relating to development and pay when they are lucky to be resident in developed countries, however, I honestly question the validity of the assertion made by the Professor you met.

It is totally nonsensical for anyone to claim or even suggest that a professor in Nigeria was earning 10000 naira in 1997, that is simply false or just an attempt to exaggerate their bad working conditions and also justify their decision to emmigrate. If he was teaching in a federal university, which I believe he was, the minimum salary in 1997 was about 60000 per month for senior lecturer 1 and 11 positions, so his story about getting 10000 naira is simply ludicrous and on the borderline of extreme deception and falsification of facts.  Having said that, everyone , well most folks, have there own individual aspirations and dreams and it is no ones business how they legitimately try to achieve these aspirations.

In answer to the issue on this thread, one observable fact is that a lot of folks over -simplify the challenges attached with moving to N.America or Europe. Dayo if you can recollect when we were all planning to move abroad, we used to say we would walk anywhere to save money comparing it our treks from the cyber cafe in Ikeja to Egbeda, it is when get there that you realise that it is a different ball game entirely. Another lesson learnt from my own experience is that no matter how much research you have carried out, it will be different in real life, the clue in my own opinion is to involve yourself in productive endeavours and keep your head down, the fact is that majority of deportees are usually caught engaging themselves in some form of illegality, fact!!

I live in Ireland and travel to the UK often as missus is from there and have seen loads of Nigerians living in both countries illegally for years and just bidding their time to take the right shot at legalising their stay and I continue to hear positive stories. Putting aside bad luck and "winches" from home it is possible,

Just my 4 cents,
