Lassa Fever is a type of Haemorrhagic Fever first discovered in Nigeria in the 1960s.

Since then Lassa Fever has affected Nigerians around this time of the year on an almost annual basis(@least I am aware of the last 3 years). The incidence has increased over time and this present outbreak has been more than recorded in the past.

Worse about this is how many Doctors and Nurses have lost their lives to this deadly Virus.

However, Nigerians have been more fixated about talking of Coronavirus than this Lassa fever that has affected their own people more than anybody else.

By now, after about 40years, shouldn't we have developed an action plan against Lassa Fever, done a lot of research, developed vaccines and even created protocols for easy identification, quarantine, diagnosis and effective treatment of people who have this killer disease.

It is sad that to get protective equipment for health Workers is war and some people who come with similar symptoms to Lassa fever can not be treated because health workers don't have what they need to protect themselves.

I sat with a friend of mine who works in one of the Federal Health Institutions. He lamented about this lack of necessary materials to help them care for these patients. I looked in the news and realise that the silence is loud. How many posts have we seen on front page about Valentine and even about coronavirus but our fellow Country men are dying because we fail to do what is right.

The Government should do more about this Lassa fever and protect the remaining Doctors and Nurses who have not left this Country.
