My friend's golf 4 has been having an engine problem. The engine makes a cracking sound mostly in the hot afternoon as if the top gasket is burnt but i believe its over heating. The car has been computer diagnosed a month ago but with no big problem. The only problem was a cooling fan relay which was changed which solved the problem for two weeks. Later it started showing engine oil warning light and battery warning. The the sound came back seriously even at the cold harmattan night. Engine oil, filter and oil switch was changed but did nt solve the problem I need a solution and a possible cause.
On my own car i had the cooling system thermostat removed which reduced over heating but the cooling fan started working constantly. I advised the same thing for the golf 4 but his mechanic said his acc will nt work without the thermostat. Hows that true and is it best to remove these thermostats on cars as soon as they arrive NGR?
Also on my own car, a honda accord 97 model which i believe is a 4 speed auto but the car behaves like its a 5 speed auto when i drive with a/c in the hot afternoon. I noticed without a/c i travel at 140km/hr at an rpm of about 3750 but with a/c in the hot afternoon i achieve and maintain the same speed at 3250rpm. I also notice a small gear change when its already on the 4th speed which drops the rpm from about 3250 to 2850 at about 120km/hr. In a nut shell summary, sometimes the car runs 120km/hr at 3250rpm and sometimes at 2850rpm. Why the difference, or is the gear box design to adapt to some conditions?
