Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, yesterday disclosed that Nigeria’s population will reach about 543 million in 2050, and noted that the explosion would be more of a burden than an asset unless there is commensurate economic growth to take care of the population. The Vice President made the disclosure at the inauguration of the Senior Executive Course (SEC) 42 of the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) Kuru near Jos Plateau State. He said the current administration is determined to bring appropriate policies to tackle the challenge that comes along with rapid population growth and ensure appropriate equilibrium.

Represented by the acting Head of Service, Folashade Yomi Esan, Osinbajo said human capital development involves creating the necessary environment for Nigerians to acquire relevant knowledge, skills and competences that can help grow a healthy society. He said the present administration is strongly committed to ensuring that the exponential population growth rate of Nigeria does not have a negative impact on the Nigerian society.

He charged the graduands to work in meeting up the population challenge, saying “The Federal Government has high expectations of the nominees of Senior Executive Course 42, given the critical role of human capital development as a response mechanism to rapid population growth in our national economy. “You should research carefully into this theme in order to proffer policy options that will enable Government fashion out appropriate responses to the challenge of rapid population growth and slow pace of human capital development,” he charged.

As at year 2000, Nigeria population was estimated to 122 Million plus, in year 2020, we are estimated to be 200 Million. This shows the rate at which our population get increasing everyday. There is now need for urgent actions to meet the demand of the country for future years.

This is a good projection.

Policy and disciplined implementation to continue across administrations, that is how you prepare a national response.

Very very big mistake

At this point it is not only the burden of the government we the citizens has a part to play.
First do not give birth to children you are incapable of nurturing
Use birth control. You can't continue to increase population without contributing to the economy.
These same set of people are usually the first to point accusing fingers to the government when things go wrong.

The projection is pointing towards our explonantial population year in year out.

With appropriate policies, the population growth will be used to our own advantage. Developing human capital requires creating the necessary initiatives in which people can learn better and apply innovative skills.

In this era of climate change..... we Nigerians must be thinking on reducing our population for quality of standard of living. My brothers, the Earth is a finite object and does not have an infinity capacity for unregulated population growth.

Citizens should not see this as a burden to the government alone if nothing is done to address it before the situation get out of hand therefore, everyone must rise to do what is expected in whatever measure they can contribute most especially in terms of job provision, security and other basic necessities to complete the effort of government for better living and safe society.
