Apple has issued an investor update warning the ongoing coronavirus epidemic has seriously curtailed its production of iPhones in China.

In a statement issued on Monday, the company said it would no longer meet its revenue predictions for the first quarter of 2020, which had previously been based on an eight per cent surge to $AU84 billion recorded for the last three months of 2019.

“Work is starting to resume around the country, but we are experiencing a slower return to normal conditions than we had anticipated,” Apple said in the statement.

“Worldwide iPhone supply will be temporarily constrained.”

Apple went on to say that although its iPhone manufacturing partner in China, Foxconn, operated plants outside of the virus’ epicentre in the Hubei province, facilities throughout the country were reopening and recommencing production at a slower rate than expected.

“The health and well-being of every person who helps make these products possible is our paramount priority, and we are working in close consultation with our suppliers and public health experts as this ramp continues,” the statement said.

“These iPhone supply shortages will temporarily affect revenues worldwide.”

The predicted drop in revenue is also based on plummeting sales of Apple products in its third-largest market.

Apple closed all its stores in mainland China as the virus took hold.

While the company says it is now gradually reopening them, few people are walking in through the doors.
