EGYPT’S “TWO IS ENOUGH” FAMILY PLANNING CAMPAIGN

When a country’s population grows faster than its GDP, economists tell us it is in trouble. But when on top of that the nation lacks even basic infrastructure, it is in double trouble. If we then add to all this the predicted catastrophic effects of global warming, that nation is in triple trouble! Nigeria is such a country. So is DRC. So are many other countries in Africa.

Egypt began to do something about its galloping population with its initiative and campaign of “TWO IS ENOUGH” (or better grammar: Two are enough) so that couples can limit the number of children they have. Every nation likes children, but there comes a time when QUALITY OF LIFE should be more important than QUANTITY IN LIFE. As some say in Nigeria, “Why have children to suffer?”, when you know that the future seems pretty bleak for them.

In 2018 Egypt’s President El-Sisi said, “The two biggest dangers that Egypt faces are terrorism and population growth, and this challenge decreases Egypt’s chances of moving forward.” Egypt’s TWO IS ENOUGH was launched in June 2018 to reduce population growth rate.

Apart from the triple whammy already mentioned in the first paragraph, the progressive world is in its 4th Industrial Revolution where a small population is becoming more desirable as a good number of jobs will be taken up by Robots, Drones, and Artificial Intelligence etc. Nigeria and other African countries should seriously consider Egypt’s TWO IS ENOUGH family planning initiative. Its aim would be to slow down the rapid population growth to allow for infrastructure, food security, technology uptake and creation, etc to produce economic wellbeing and sustainability. Once this stability is reached, the generation then present, can always review TWO IS ENOUGH and couples who choose to can again have more children.

Like many things, the way that a TWO IS ENOUGH initiative is implemented and managed is key to its successful uptake. Citizens should be properly informed about it, and about the consequences if nothing is done, of a huge population, especially one that is unproductive.
