AFTER APPLE CEO Steve Jobs dismissed Research in Motion (RIM), claiming that RIM would never catch up to Apple in market share again, it seems that the Canadian smartphone outfit has proved him wrong.
RIM reported record third quarter results for the three months ended November 27 with record Blackberry smartphone shipments of 14.2 million that grew 40 per cent over the quarter.
This means that RIM currently has a larger market share of the smartphone market than Apple for the second consecutive quarter for the first time.
Smartphone shipment figures are hard to compare because Apple and RIM report at different times. Some analysts think that Apple could ship 16 million Iphones between October and December.
Still, RIM has a lot to celebrate. Revenue grew 40 per cent over the same quarter last year to $5.5 billion and its cash increased by $446 million to $2.5 billion at the end of the quarter.
Approximately 5.1 million net new Blackberry subscriber accounts were added in the quarter. At the end of the quarter, the total Blackberry subscriber account base was over 55 million.
Jim Balsillie, Co-CEO of Research In Motion was pleased. He said, "With strong results and momentum from our recent product introductions, as well as growing excitement from our partners and customers around upcoming smartphone, tablet, software and service offerings, we are setting the stage for continuing success."

Looks like Blackberry is still doing something right maintaining their sales numbers, small point to note despite all the BB handsets in Nigeria, I doubt we have up to 0.007% of the total Blackberry worldwide sales.

I'm not an iPhone or BB user but, Nice one RIM.

The fact that RIM, with over 10 BB models in circulation is struggling to match sales of one iPhone model speaks more of their failure grin

its only in nigeria you find people being so freaked about BB. where i am, Blackberry is nothing. even a seller will advice you not to buy it cos it is outdated. except for BB touch.

i wanted to sell a BB storm2. they were pricing it as if it was nothing. others were saying they cant buy it.

but in Naija, its da bomb.

Currently in nigeria BB sales is on the rise compared to iphones.

Different markets have phones that either sell more or else of.
In my summation, i think in the Nigerian Markets, BB"s are out selling any other phone model, not because it is a blackberry, but because of what it does as a smartphone.
And now with the price war going on between network providers, for BIS subscriptions, watch the demand of BB's skyrocket !!!!
Re: Is Blackberry Outselling Apple Iphone? by Htown64(m): 12:39am On Dec 18, 2010
Lexusgs430 you are very correct concerning the increase in demand for blackberry which is going to take place as a result of the price war between service providers. Beside that its very costly for you to buy apps for your iphone and for every apps you need a system to download it to your iphone except you have a credit card to buy directly on your iphone.

However the sales of both Blackberry and iPhone in Nigeria is not a pinprick on RIM or Apple global sales. Both companies are reporting sales of over 14 million units in 3 months (a quarter), I don't believe up to a 2000 blackberries and definately not iPhones are sold every week in Nigeria, this would equate to 180,000 phones in 90 days, I don't think so.

Nokia is still the king in Nigeria along with 'China' phones.

But worldwide it just goes to show not everybody needs all the technology packed into an iPhone. Technology companies do a really good job selling us things we didn't know we needed.

I agree with a previous poster that lower BIS charges and iTunes restrictions will severely limit the growth of iPhone in Nigeria. The iPhone is still in the domain of the tech savvy person here in Nigeria, whereas many people are happy getting their emails on BB and BB messenger, that do them!!

in which market is BB outselling iphone? nigeria shey?

cuz as a matter of fact that is just plain bull.

the onlyy thing holding up RIM fugures for now is the fact that they tried to go global, and mumu markets like the nigerian one are holding up.

as a matter of fact, look closely at the figures and see how just apple and android AMERICA ALONE figures are doing next to RIM GLOBAL, the u see that that coy is tottering on the brink of failure.

sure the started the smartfone market craze, but they have been left behind so badly, its hard to see how they gonna recover in time. by this time next year, even Nokia will be waaay above RIM despite of the debacle symbian is becoming. (at least they are trying.)

matter of fact, the only thing keeping BB on peoples hands is the enterprise server communication ability, once thats tackled by others, they are toast.

matter of fact, 3rd party apps do that on android already, and full seamless support is coming with the next android release by april next year.

that time na una for here go dey buy am only, like u pple seem to be the only ones who think Nokia is still a smartphone Behemoth

all you guys predicting doom for RIM make me laugh. what's wrong with a blackberry? blackberries do what a phone should do, and perfectly well : communication. Steve Jobs, Gates, Eric Schmidt, Sergey Brin and co use blackberries. blackberries are way better that all those crippled symbian toys nokia calls "smartphones" .

the fact that it does all these things dosent make it da bomb the way its appears. there are way greater and even more expensive phone all around.

RIM has actually done well for over the years. They cornered all the markets like the corporate world, latest fad, chav teens and the semi-literates.

You'll realize that most people using iphones also have a BB,while most BB users don't have iphones. I have never heard of companies deploy Iphones for members of staff. In UK today, you only need to top-up £20 and you have Internet and BB messenger service for 6 months, hence all teenagers use BB.

Now talk about all the Sikira sindodos, that wants to just brandish a blackberry phone just for the sake of it.

There are so many better phones than BB,but IMHO they got most of their target markets on lock down.
