Tyson Fury is the World Boxing Council heavyweight champion after beating Deontay Wilder.

In the lead-up to the rematch of their epic heavyweight title fight, Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury each promised to win by knockout — Wilder because he’s widely considered the hardest puncher in history, and Fury because he said he needed a new approach.

Only Fury delivered on that pledge.

Fury battered Wilder over six-and-a-half brutal rounds, dropping him twice, and pounding on him until Wilder’s corner stopped the fight early in the seventh.

With the win, Fury became the World Boxing Council heavyweight champion, and made an emphatic statement in his case to be considered the world’s best heavyweight. The knockout loss was Wilder’s first defeat in 44 fights, while Fury improved his record to 30-0-1.

The two men first fought in December 2018, when a measured and tactical Fury built a big lead on the judges’ scorecards before Wilder scored two late knockdowns. That bout ended in a split draw, and set up Saturday’s big-money, high-stakes rematch.

Fury dominated, imposing his size — he weighed 273 pounds, compared with 231 pounds for Wilder. He controlled distance with a stiff jab, and used it to set up hard right hands and thudding body shots. In clinches, Fury leaned on the lighter Wilder, or wrenched his neck until the referee, Kenny Bayless, could separate them. At one point, Fury even wagged his tongue near Wilder’s bloody neck.

By Round 6, Wilder appeared exhausted, and in the seventh Fury trapped him in a corner and pummeled him until Wilder’s corner threw in the towel.

Afterward Fury, who held four heavyweight titles before retiring in 2016, signaled his intention to rule the heavyweight division.

“The king has returned,” he said during an interview in the ring before grabbing the microphone to lead the crowd in singing Don McLean’s “American Pie".

Round by round analysis

Round 7: Tyson Fury wins the heavyweight championship.

Deontay Wilder retreated to a neutral corner while Tyson Fury pounded on him with lefts and rights.

The towel flew into the ring from Wilder’s corner and referee Kenny Bayless ended the fight, wrapping up a masterful performance from Tyson Fury.

Round 6: Fury has fought a perfect fight so far.
Tyson Fury has won every minute of this fight so far.

He came with a game plan and is executing: Control timing with the jab, crowd Wilder and lean on him inside, batter the body and break him down. It is easily a shutout so far.

Round 5: Fury loses a point but is still dominating. Tyson Fury appeared to have lost a point for repeatedly elbowing Deontay Wilder. It won’t matter.

He dropped the champion again in Round 5. Wilder doesn’t look like he has enough gas for three more rounds, let alone seven.

Round 4: Fury is tiring out everyone.
Deontay Wilder is looking gassed after taking some big body shots from Tyson Fury.

Referee Kenny Bayless looks tired after separating the two fighters after many clinches.

Everyone looks exhausted except Fury, who is likely expanding his lead on the scorecards

Round 3: Fury knocks down Wilder.
Fury is controlling timing and distance with his jab. Wilder hesitated, and Fury dropped him with a right hand. Wilder is in a deep deficit. Fury and his fans are energized, understandably so.

Round 2: Wilder and Fury tied each other up in the corner at the bell. The second round was closer than the first. Fury still pressed, eager to test out his new size and strength.

Wilder looks a little confused as he tries to decipher this new, aggressive Fury. Some big Wilder right hands got Fury’s attention.

Round 1: Fury lands the best punch.
Deontay Wilder, right, throws a punch against Tyson Fury in their heavyweight title fight.
Fury promised he would open quickly, and he delivered, stalking the harder-punching Wilder though most of Round 1.

Wilder landed a clean right hand, but Fury answered with several salvos, driving Wilder back. Fury landed the best punch so far toward the end of the round.

The fighters (creatively) got to the ring.

Deontay Wilder was decked out head to toe in black as he walked to the ring. Deontay Wilder came out to the ring wearing black on black on black — trunks, body armor, and mask. Black right down to the gloves, and strolling past photos of African-American historical figures — Harriet Tubman, Malcolm X, Jackie Robinson and more — projected onto the arena’s hallway wall.

Tyson Fury was waiting patiently in the ring, bouncing to stay warm as rapper D Smoke, the winner of the Netflix reality show “Rhythm + Flow,” performed as he escorted Wilder.

Fury, decked out in a red velour robe with faux-fur trim, and wearing a crown, rode to the ring on a throne.

Mehn, I fear Tyson Fury o! I watched their pre-match interview and the guy was so composed, fearless and highly intimidating. In the ring, he seriously humbled my man - Wilder.

I just hope our AJ will study him very well and match up with him.

Tyson Fury made his mark once again tonight, obliterating Deontay Wilder in their highly-anticipated rematch, winning via seventh round stoppage when Wilder’s corner threw the towel in a fight that had become increasingly one-sided.

Fury (30-0-1, 21 KO) now has to be considered the clear No. 1 heavyweight in the world, even considering he’s certainly not the undisputed champion, what with Anthony Joshua holding three of the four major sanctioning body titles. But Fury’s win gives him the WBC belt, which is a lot easier for most people to “get” than just the claim of being lineal champion, and he also gets the Ring Magazine belt back.
