ENUGU COUNCIL POLL: CYMS Calls For Cancellation Of Election

Following the just concluded Local government area election held in Enugu State on 29th February 2020 conducted by the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC), one of the accredited Election observer group, Committee of Youth on Mobilization and Sensitization (CYMS) led by Obinna Nwaka has called for the cancellation of the election on the ground of unpreparedness, poor voter education and Sensitization leading to low turnout, Voter apathy, poor mobilization of electorates by political parties.

He said this in a press statement issued to newsmen yesterday in Enugu, adding that the accreditation of political parties support groups bearing names of notable politicians in the State as observers which is unethical has also discredited the entire process.

He also noted slotting in of already printed ballot papers into box and usage of old printed ballot papers with 87 party logos not screened or cleared for the scheduled election.

In the same vein, Izuchukwu Yusuf Eze the Enugu State Coordinator of the group who was on ground 3 days to the election expressed his dissatisfaction over the electoral process and attributed the outcome of the election to the State government failure to provide necessary financial and technical support to ensure a successful election.

While condemning the political attacks and violence recorded at Ezeagu and Uzo- uwani LGA, he encouraged the youths to be patriotic in exercising their franchise and shun unruly behaviour that has the tendency of damaging our democracy.

He however commended the security apparatus in the state for ensuring a secured environment, while noting that only two political parties keenly contested the election; APC and PDP with impressive performance, adding that late arrival of electoral materials was observed in many LGAs especially at Enugu North where voting started at 11:46am which led to demoralization of eligible voters as a result of late commencement.

The result sheet was missing in some polling units as some party agents could not ascertain where result were entered after counting, he noted and asked the ENSIEC to cancel the elections also advised them to ensure adequate training of their staff and ADHOC as many took instructions from the PDP agents which is unprofessional and unethical to electoral rules.

Newsmen gathered that, CYMS is a registered evaluation, monitoring, mobilization and sensitization platform assisting the Government.
