Are you BUILDING A HOUSE? Have you considered the type of roof that best suits your house?
Building a house in Nigeria demands financial commitment that at the point of roofing, the house must have consumed a lot of money. It’s only natural to get cautious at this point because, as we say: “Roofing a house is like giving it a nice haircut, only permanent.”
After investing so much in your house, don’t you think it requires a good haircut? Below are the two main types of roofs, their description, their advantages, and disadvantages.

1. Stone Coated Roofs: Coming into the market very recently, this roof is on its way to becoming the most sought after roofing sheet in Nigeria. Its underlay is a make-up of Steel, Aluminium, and Zinc, while its surface consists of stone chips which are attached to the underlay with acrylic film.

Advantages

i. It is aesthetically pleasing: Its beauty comes from the fineness of the stones laid over the metal. Giving it a shiny, radiating, and natural look.

ii. It is highly durable: Stone coated roofs can (are supposed to) last for a lifetime. Despite its light weight, it is very strong and sturdy, and has been tested positive against strong winds over 120mph. Once it’s up there, there’s no need for replacement, and hardly is there need for maintenance. No stone coated roof should be bought without a warranty of at least fifty years.

iii. It has a cooling effect: One of the major features that inspired the production of this roof, it serves as a heat repellant under high temperature conditions. This is as a result of the stone chips etched on its upper layer. Being a poor conductor of heat, the stones repel heat from the sunlight, thereby making the house cool at all times.

iv. It is fire resistant: Unlike a lot of other roofs, this roof is not at the mercy of any fire outbreak, and therefore can serve as a dampener in the case of fire outbreak.

v. It is sound proof: This roof lessens the noise produced by the sound of raindrops hitting the roof surface.

vi. It does not fade: The roof surface is made of well-cooked rocks that come in their primary colors.

vii. It has a wide range of designs: From bond, to classic, to shingles, to Milano, and many more, this roofing sheet offers a wide variety of designs for aesthetic purposes.

viii. It is rust resistant: The Aluminium and Zinc elements combine to form galvalume – a corrosion resistant compound – which prevents the roof from rusting beneath the stone layers.

Disadvantages

i. Cost: It is more expensive than the other types of roof as a result of its many great features.

ii. Installation: Being new to the market, there are few installers who can install according to the manufacturers’ standard and requirement. Fortunately, we have contacts of installers specialized in this type of roof. Contact us on 08132131972

iii. Imitation: Seeing the prospect of this roof, people have begun to create lookalike products using fake rocks that fade over time. Know who you deal with, and make sure you request for the ISO certification before you get a roof from dealers. We also have contacts of companies that provide ISO certified roofs. 2. Aluminium Roofs: This roofing sheet is the current trend in Nigeria. Made of aluminium, it boasts a lot of advantages over the Fiber Britment roof (the one that preceded it).

Advantages

i. Easy Installation: It is very easy to install, and therefore has a lot of experienced installers.

ii. It is Rust Resistant: Aluminium is a rust resistant element, therefore you can be rest assured that your roof would never rust.

iii. It is malleable: It can be beaten into any shape easily. This aids in easy installation.

iv. It can be aesthetically pleasing: Some aluminium variations like the step tiles can have a beautiful look and colouration, although not half as beautiful and radiant as the Stone Coated roof.

v. It is durable: Aluminium roofs can last for a very long time (50 years), although not maintaining its look over that period of time. It can withstand strong winds, though not as well as the stone coated.

Disadvantages

i. It appears dull over time: Aluminium sheets are painted in a variety of colours, and over time, these paints tend to appear dull, creating incongruence and shabbiness on the surface of the roof. You could only improve its appearance by repainting it.
ii. It requires momentary maintenance: Aluminium roofs dent under pressure leaving an unwanted image for a roof. Therefore it requires changing once in a while.
iii. It is not soundproof: People have complained that aluminium roofs enhance the sound of raindrops. To lessen this effect, you can install a solid sheathing underneath the roof.
