The Niger State government has placed a total ban on any form of begging in the state.

The Commissioner of Information and Communication, Alhaji Mohammed Sani Idris, who disclosed this to journalists in Minna said the law was not aimed at attacking the culture of almanjiri.

He noted that similar laws in other states have more or less turned Niger State into a dumping ground for the almanjiris that were sent packing from those states.

According to Idris, anybody caught begging will be repatriated to his state.

The commissioner insisted that quranic teachers who are interested in running schools for the almanjiris should provide them with accommodation and feeding without sending them out to beg. According to him , there are more than enough Shangaya schools in the state run by government to accommodate interested almanjiris.

"What we will not tolerate is somebody running an almajiri school in a way of turning them to beggars. Gradually, Minna is becoming a dumping ground for almajiri. We have discovered that many of them are not even from this state.”

They will migrate down south because of the ban. Our governors in the south keeps accomodating them because they don't want it to be used against them in future because of federal appointments supposing they take actions against them. They fail to see the security threats these beggars are posing to the society. Most of them are fully fit but still masquerade as beggars.

Banning street begging is a welcome development...But you have to make up with alternative ways to not invite crimes to the city....

Just like banning mad people on the street without a psychiatric hospital to accommodate them..

They are trooping to southwest now. Lagos should regulate their activities. They are even defecate on the street.

Any behaviour or activity that is prohibited and which is punishable by imprisonment is a crime.
In some jurisdictions even if the punishment is a fine it is still a crime

Just yesterday a grown man came to me at katampe for a tip for transport. I had the right to turn away..he never compelled me, I gave it out freely...

The banned beggars are actually those seated at the roadside with their plates... where passerby can support them with any amount you wish to give.....

Under the law of Lagos state it is a crime punishable by 3 months imprisonment .
